Job summary

East Texas A&M University Counseling Center seeks a Counselor I to provide counseling services to students, supporting personal and academic success in a developmental model. The role includes crisis response, outreach, prevention, and collaboration with faculty, staff, and students to meet mental health needs.

Based in Commerce, Texas, the position requires a Master’s degree in counseling, psychology, or social work and licensure eligibility within 90 days.

Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in counseling, psychology or social work.
  • Experience in counseling or related field preferred.
  • Knowledge of intervention models and university mental health needs.

Responsibilities

  • Provides individual, group, and couples counseling.
  • Conducts intakes, screenings, and psychological assessments.
  • Engages in client staffing, case management, consultation and referral.
  • Provides crisis intervention services and consults with the director as needed.
  • Engages in program development, educational outreach, and evaluation.
  • Works collaboratively with internal and external colleagues.
  • Consults with faculty and staff regarding services for students.
  • Engages in professional development activities to maintain licensure.
  • Provides service to the University through involvement in committees.
  • Utilizes computer technology to support the Counseling Center functions.
  • Utilizes EMR to maintain client records per HIPAA/FERPA.
  • Performs other duties as assigned by the Director.

SUMMARY:

The Counselor I - provide counseling services to assist students in maximizing their potential for personal and academic success. Exhibit a commitment to a developmental model by initiating and implementing interventions that promote a healthy campus environment and meet the mental health needs of the University community. Conducts crisis response, outreach and prevention services, and consultation with faculty, staff, and students as needed. DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Provides individual, group, and couples counseling.
  • Conducts intakes, screenings, and psychological assessments.
  • Engages in client staffing, case management, consultation and referral.

  • Utilizes computer technology to support the Counseling Center functions.
  • Utilizes Electronic Medical Records System to maintain client records in accordance with HIPAA and FERPA regulations.
  • Performs other duties as assigned by the Director.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
  • Education: Master’s degree in counseling, psychology or social work.
  • Experience: One year of experience in counseling or a related field or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Knowledge / Skills: Understanding of relevant intervention models, programs and resources.
  • Knowledge of the mental health needs of a university population.
  • Excellent organizational and administrative abilities.
  • Strong work ethic and sense of collegiality.
  • Knowledge of word processing, spreadsheet, and database applications.
  • Knowledge of student development.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to multitask and work cooperatively with others.
  • Ability to present information clearly and concisely.
  • Licensing/Professional Certifications: Licensed Professional Counselor in Texas or eligible for Licensed Professional Counselor-Associate in Texas to be obtained in the first 90 days.
  • If eligible for LPC-Associate status, applicants must be able to provide an official transcript demonstrating a master’s in counseling with 60 credit hours in counseling and related education programs and a copy of a passing NCE (Nationally Counselor Examination) score for review.
  • Must maintain licensure for continued employment.
  • Physical Requirements: None.
  • Other Requirements: Work beyond normal office hours and/or work on weekends.
PREFERRED EDUCATION / SKILLS/ EXPERIENCE:
  • Doctorate in counseling, psychology, or social work.
  • Three or more years’ experience in counseling or related field.
  • Experience in a college counseling Center or other relevant university setting.
  • Bi-lingual (preferably Spanish speaking).
  • Live within 30 minutes of campus.
  • Advanced training in crisis management and trauma informed mental health care.
