Job summary

Smurfit Westrock in Hicksville, NY, is looking for a Production Supervisor to oversee daily production, assign tasks, and ensure quality and safety across the department.

You will monitor key performance metrics, drive continuous improvement, train staff, and coordinate with Customer Service on production status and issues.

Qualifications

  • Minimum 3 years of supervisory experience (external candidate)
  • Able to perform or quickly learn the jobs supervised
  • Strong technical knowledge and ability to lead and motivate others
  • Math and measurement skills to understand and analyze metrics
  • Effective interpersonal communication and teamwork
  • Ability to pass color vision test and work in a fast-paced environment

Responsibilities

  • Oversee day-to-day department operations, assign work, and plan daily production
  • Manage direct reports, performance reviews, and problem solving
  • Ensure safety, GMPs, and SOP compliance; maintain quality standards
  • Monitor and document departmental metrics (Productivity, Safety, Quality, Waste)
  • Coordinate staffing to meet workload and productivity targets
  • Support Customer Service with production status updates
  • Lead process improvements and 5S housekeeping, cross-training, and training

Production Supervisor - Hicksville, NY

The Opportunity:

Ensure the timely production of quality products that meet or exceed customer expectations. Proactively manage departmental metrics that impact cost (e.g., downtime, make-readies, run speed and waste). Ensure compliance with all company policies and procedures, all S.O.Ps, work instructions, and GMPs. Responsible for day-to-day management of department including handing out work assignments, daily planning, managing performance of direct reports, operational decisions, problem-solving, and conflict management.

  • Fosters a team atmosphere, provides vision, and demonstrates support of the company’s core processes, leadership, and decisions.
  • Ensures department meets production and quality goals daily.
  • Identifies, documents, and shares departmental metrics for Productivity, Safety, Quality, Waste and any other metrics required by the company.
  • Plans and schedules staffing to meet workload requirements and productivity standards.
  • Manages employee performance by setting goals and consistently holding employees accountable for meeting performance standards.
  • Conducts on-time performance reviews of direct reports and use data to improve productivity.
  • Performs duties of the Production Clerk when needed.
  • Trains or ensures training is conducted in Safety, GMPs, Quality systems rules and procedures.
  • Ensures compliance to all company policies and procedures.
  • Supports Customer Service representatives by providing timely up to date information on production status and issues.
  • Understands the functions and capabilities of various departments and uses those resources effectively.
  • Analyzes root causes and solves problems effectively and in a timely manner.
  • Leads, motivates, and inspires individual workers and teams.
  • Manages effectively through change, transition, and conflict.
  • Owns issues and problems, seeing them through to resolution.
  • Ensures employees are cross-trained and given opportunities to learn new things.
  • Provides needed resources and support (technical, training, motivational).
  • Builds collaborative relationships within the organization.
  • Identifies and resolves potential safety problems; responds to safety audits.
  • Writes S.O.Ps as needed; submits revision requests and creates temporary work instructions.
  • Produces daily production reports as required.
  • Maintains up to date and accurate information in both hard copy and electronic formats.
  • Ensures all documentation/time sheets are legible and accurate.
  • Addresses both internal and external corrective actions.
  • Maintains a clean work environment (5S Basics).
  • Leads effective department meetings.
  • Performs other job duties as assigned.
What You Need to Succeed:
  • High school diploma or general education degree (G.E.D.); college degree preferred.
  • Minimum 3 years’ supervisory experience if external candidate; printing experience preferred.
  • Able to do the jobs he/she is supervising or to quickly gain a working knowledge of those jobs.
  • Must demonstrate strong technical knowledge and ability to lead and motivate others.
  • Ability to meet and/or pass the minimum requirement on a mechanical test or have demonstrated mechanical aptitude through prior work experience.
  • Math and measurement skills to understand, track, analyze, and report on operating metrics.
  • Effective interpersonal communication skills.
  • Ability to foster teamwork and motivate individual performers.
  • Knowledge of or be able to learn safety rules and procedures, operating, maintenance, and technical policies and procedures.
  • Must be able to relate effectively with others at all levels of the organization.
  • Process oriented.
  • Reliable and dependable.
  • Ability to pass color vision test.
  • Functions well in a fast-paced environment and manage competing priorities.
