Production Planner (Manufacturing Scheduler / Production Planning Specialist)
Location: Phoenix, AZ (Goodyear, AZ area)
Job Overview
We are seeking an experienced Production Planner (also known as a Manufacturing Scheduler or ERP Production Coordinator) to join our manufacturing and supply chain team in Phoenix, AZ. In this role, you will coordinate production planning and scheduling in a fast-paced manufacturing environment (electrical and mechanical engineering industry) to ensure on-time delivery and optimal production efficiency. You will oversee supply chain coordination and inventory planning, utilizing ERP/MRP systems (e.g., NetSuite) and advanced Microsoft Excel skills to optimize manufacturing workflows. The ideal candidate is detail-oriented, analytical, and proactive in using demand forecasting and capacity planning to drive efficient production while meeting customer demands.
Key Responsibilities
- Production Scheduling & Workflow Optimization: Develop, maintain, and schedule production plans based on customer orders, demand forecasts, and capacity constraints. Ensure efficient manufacturing workflow optimization to meet production targets and customer deadlines.
- Supply Chain Coordination: Collaborate with procurement, supply chain, and warehouse teams to ensure raw materials and components are available as needed. Coordinate with vendors and internal departments to prevent material shortages and keep the supply chain running smoothly.
- ERP Production Coordination: Utilize ERP/MRP systems (NetSuite or similar) as an ERP Production Coordinator – enter and update production orders, generate work orders, and monitor production status in real-time. Ensure data accuracy in the system for material requirements planning and scheduling.
- Inventory Planning & Control: Monitor inventory levels of raw materials, WIP, and finished goods. Implement effective inventory planning strategies to balance stock levels with production needs, avoiding shortages or excess. Work closely with inventory control to trigger reorders through MRP and maintain optimal stock.
- Demand Forecasting & Capacity Planning: Work with sales and planning teams to incorporate demand forecasting data into the production schedule. Adjust plans proactively based on forecast changes or customer demand fluctuations. Perform capacity planning analyses to align production output with forecasted demand and available resources (labor and equipment).
- Cross-Functional Collaboration: Act as a Manufacturing Scheduler who liaises between production, engineering, quality, and maintenance teams. Communicate the production schedule and any changes to all stakeholders. Coordinate with the engineering and quality departments to address any production issues (e.g. machine downtime or quality holds) and adjust schedules accordingly.
- Performance Monitoring & Continuous Improvement: Track key production metrics such as on-time delivery, cycle times, and downtime. Analyze production data to identify bottlenecks or inefficiencies and recommend improvements for greater production efficiency. Implement workflow improvements or manufacturing process optimizations (e.g., Lean principles) to increase productivity and reduce costs.
- Budget and Cost Monitoring: Oversee production activities to ensure they stay within budgetary constraints. Watch labor and material costs during scheduling and make adjustments to optimize resource utilization and cost efficiency.
- Reporting: Prepare regular reports on production status, schedule adherence, inventory status, and efficiency metrics. Present production performance updates to management and make data-driven recommendations for improving throughput and meeting KPIs.
- Problem Solving: Quickly address and resolve production issues such as delays, material shortages, or capacity overloads. Develop contingency plans for production disruptions to minimize impact on delivery commitments.
- Process Documentation: Maintain up-to-date documentation of production planning processes, scheduling procedures, and any changes to workflows. Ensure that standard operating procedures (SOPs) for production planning are followed and updated as needed.
Qualifications & Skills
- Education & Experience: Bachelor’s degree in Supply Chain Management, Operations Management, Industrial Engineering, Mechanical/Electrical Engineering, or a related field. (Equivalent work experience in production planning will also be considered.) 3+ years of experience in production planning, scheduling, or supply chain coordination in a manufacturing environment is required.
- ERP/MRP Proficiency: Hands-on experience with ERP/MRP systems for production planning – NetSuite highly preferred (experience with similar systems like SAP, Oracle, or Microsoft Dynamics acceptable). Ability to set up production schedules, run MRP calculations, and maintain accurate data in the system.
- Microsoft Excel Skills: Advanced MS Excel proficiency is required (creating spreadsheets, using formulas, PivotTables, VLOOKUP, etc.) for data analysis, reporting, and scheduling calculations. Experience with data analysis or visualization tools (e.g., Access, SQL, Power BI) is a plus.
- Production Scheduling Expertise: Strong knowledge of production scheduling techniques and manufacturing workflows. Ability to create detailed schedules that maximize throughput and efficiently allocate resources (machines, materials, labor). Experience with manufacturing scheduling software or tools is beneficial.
- Analytical & Problem-Solving Skills: Excellent analytical skills with the ability to interpret production data, forecast demand, and identify trends. Proven problem-solving abilities to quickly address production challenges and adjust plans. Familiarity with continuous improvement, Lean manufacturing, or Six Sigma methodologies is a plus.
- Organization & Time Management: Exceptional organizational skills and attention to detail. Able to manage multiple production priorities and adjust to changing demands while meeting deadlines. Time-management skills are critical in balancing short-term scheduling adjustments with long-term planning.
- Communication & Teamwork: Strong interpersonal and communication skills. Ability to collaborate effectively with cross-functional teams (production, engineering, procurement, logistics, sales). Comfortable communicating production status and changes to all levels of the organization.
- Technical Industry Knowledge: Experience in a manufacturing environment related to electrical or mechanical engineering industries is highly desirable. Understanding of fabrication, assembly processes, or supply chain considerations for electrical/mechanical products will be beneficial.
- Certifications: Professional certifications are a plus – e.g., APICS Certified in Production and Inventory Management (CPIM) or Certified Supply Chain Professional (CSCP). Certification or training in Lean Six Sigma or other operational excellence programs is advantageous.
- Computer Skills: Proficient with general office software and project management tools. Experience with production planning modules, inventory management systems, or project scheduling tools is helpful.
Physical & Environmental Requirements
- Work Environment: Primarily an office setting within a manufacturing facility. The role requires regular interaction on the production floor, which is a factory environment (exposure to machinery, moving equipment, noise, and industrial conditions).
- Mobility: Ability to stand, walk, and move about the production floor for extended periods during the workday. Frequent walking and occasional bending or stooping may be required when observing operations or checking inventory on the shop floor.
- Lifting: Must be capable of occasionally lifting and moving materials or office items up to 25 pounds. The job is not routinely labor-intensive, but a basic level of physical ability ensures you can handle light materials or files when necessary.
- Visual & Auditory Ability: Adequate vision (with or without corrective lenses) to review detailed production schedules, read computer screens, and inspect production areas. Clear hearing and speech are important for effective communication with team members on the floor and in meetings.
- Safety: Must follow all safety guidelines and use required personal protective equipment (PPE) when on the production floor (e.g., safety glasses, steel-toed shoes, hearing protection as needed). Familiarity with standard manufacturing safety protocols is expected.
- Climate: Manufacturing areas may be subject to varying temperatures or humidity. The Production Planner should be comfortable working occasionally in a production environment that is not climate-controlled, while most administrative work will occur in a climate-controlled office.
