Job summary

Thunderbird is seeking a Production Lead to guide the production team, oversee plastic injection molding operations, and help maintain quality and safety standards.

The role requires hands-on supervision, coordination with engineers and technicians, and strong attention to detail. Training new operators and enforcing 5S practices are key responsibilities.

Qualifications

• High School Diploma or GED required; some college coursework preferred.
• Experience in plastic injection molding manufacturing a must.
• Experience supervising a production team preferred.
• Ability to read and comprehend production instructions and safety manuals.
• Strong communication and documentation skills.

Responsibilities

• Lead and monitor machine operators on the shift.
• Enforce Thunderbird Molding's quality guidelines and 5S in the production area.
• Train new shift team members.
• Coordinate with engineers, technicians and supervisors to resolve day-to-day issues.
• Review non-conforming materials and customer complaints and implement corrective actions.
• Perform inspections on injection molded parts using calipers, micrometers and other tools.
• Ensure proper packaging and documentation of parts.
• Assist with startup, in-process, and final inspections.

Production Lead Position Overview

This position leads and supports the production team, performs visual inspection of plastic parts and packaged goods. Works with Production Manager on performance goals and maintaining high level of quality and safety. This role involves meticulous attention to detail, adherence to quality control procedures, and effective communication with relevant stakeholders to address and resolve production issues.

Production Lead Essential Functions

• Leads and monitors the work of machine operators.
• Follows and enforces Thunderbird Molding’s quality guidelines.
• Completes training for all new shift team members.
• Communicates and works effectively with the other team members.
• When changing work order, be sure to notify Material Handler and Process Technician in this area to ensure all paperwork is properly documented.
• Visually inspects parts for visual defects such as shorts, flash, contamination etc.
• Notify shift Process Techs of any visual problems with the product.
• Maintains and manages 5S in the production area.
• Work effectively with engineers, technicians, supervisors, and floor personnel to resolve day-to-day issues, achieve team objectives, and promote quality principles.
• Review, investigate, disposition, and resolve non-conforming material issues, internal customer complaints, and subassembly/component supply issues.
• Analyze nonconforming material and complaint data for issues/trends – identify corrective actions as necessary.
• Verify products are packaged according to specifications.
• Perform Incoming inspection on component parts and raw materials
• Perform startup, in process, and final Inspections on injection molded parts using, Calipers, Micrometers, Height gages, Smartscope, CMM and Comparator.
• Performs other duties that may be assigned.

Production Lead Required Experience

• High School Diploma/GED required, some relevant college-level coursework preferred.
• 3 years working in the manufacturing of plastic injection molding. One year in a quality inspection function.
• 1+ years Supervision experience required.
• Ability to read and comprehend production instructions, policy manuals, safety instructions, short correspondence and business memorandums.
• Ability to communicate effectively verbally and written.
• Basic knowledge of Word, Excel and Outlook

Production Lead Physical Demands and Work Environment

• The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
• The employee is exposed to moving mechanical parts.
• Frequently required lifting and/or moving up to 50 pounds.
• Frequently required standing, bending, squatting, and reaching with hands and arms.
• Regularly required to stand for extended periods
• Ability to use hand tools.
• Ability to read applicable instructions.
