Job description

Major Tool & Machine (MTM) takes great pride in the talented people that come to work here. We offer market-leading pay, benefits, an optional 9/80 work schedule, quarterly bonus potential, and a culture focused on employee engagement.

We are seeking a hands-on, self-starting Production Engineer to support our Clean Room Assembly department in a high-mix, low-volume job shop environment. This role focuses on daily support of critical assemblies and processes, including using hand tools, installing components, inserts, pins, and bushings, and operating inspection or testing equipment. The Production Engineer will work directly on the product, helping to resolve issues, improve throughput, and drive continuous improvement initiatives while maintaining close contact with their engineering team.

This position receives technical and strategic direction from the Engineering Department and is embedded with the shop floor team, reporting operationally to an Engineering Program Manager with a dotted line to the Manufacturing Manager.

Responsibilities include:

  1. Providing daily, hands-on technical support to troubleshoot and resolve production issues.
  2. Collaborating with shop floor personnel to improve assembly methods and eliminate inefficiencies.
  3. Driving continuous improvement efforts to increase throughput, enhance ergonomics, and reduce waste.
  4. Maintaining and updating routing instructions, supplemental routing instructions, and guides to reflect best practices.
  5. Identifying and implementing corrective actions for quality or process concerns.
  6. Assisting with training and onboarding of shop floor personnel using process documentation.
  7. Supporting Engineering in process changes, trials, and new product introductions.
  8. Using inspection equipment and interpreting results to support quality objectives.
  9. Supporting documentation practices and maintaining job accuracy.
  10. Participating in job release and post-job review meetings to facilitate operational feedback and improvements.

Educational Experience: Bachelor's degree in Mechanical, Manufacturing, or Industrial Engineering preferred, but equivalent work experience in assembly or mechanical work will be considered.

Experience: Must have:

  • Strong mechanical aptitude with experience in mechanical assembly using hand tools, fixtures, and inspection tools.
  • Ability to interpret engineering drawings and assembly documentation.
  • Proficiency in computer skills, with strong communication abilities, capable of working independently and collaboratively.
  • Excellent problem-solving skills and a solutions-oriented mindset.
  • Familiarity with lean manufacturing concepts and standard work documentation is a plus.

Working Conditions: The primary work area is a clean room, requiring gowning protocols. The general shop environment may include high noise levels, physical hazards, fumes, dust, mist, exposure to oils and fluids, and welding flash.
