Job summary

The Salvation Army is seeking a Production Assistant to manage daily donation pickups and drops, driving routes to the warehouse and donor locations. You will ensure safe vehicle operation, perform inspections, and keep accurate records while representing the organization with a professional appearance.

You will load/unload items, secure goods, and assist Thrift Store personnel as needed. This role supports work therapy programs and follows the employment manual closely.

Qualifications

• Must communicate effectively and maintain professional conduct.
• Valid driver’s license and clean DMV record; pass driving test.
• Able to read maps, plan routes, and prioritize pickups.
• Experience using an iPad with GPS and truck inspection reporting.
• Strong customer service skills and professional appearance.
• DOT physical compliance may be required.

Responsibilities

• Complete driving routes for donation pickups and drops to warehouse, boxes, and donor homes.
• Ensure vehicle safety, report accidents, and complete required paperwork.
• Conduct daily vehicle inspection and keep cab/box clean.
• Manage daily routing and calls; serve as a courteous representative of The Salvation Army.
• Properly load/unload, secure goods, and optimize space using blankets/ropes.
• Support Thrift Store deliveries and supervise Truck Helper in rehab program.
• Adhere to the Manual for Production Assistants and report issues to dispatcher.
• Additional duties as assigned by supervisor.

Job description

Function: The Production Assistant will complete driving routes for pickup and/or drop off of donations at the warehouse, assigned donation boxes, and donor homes.

Duties and Responsibilities:

• Responsible for the security and safe operation of the vehicle and other assigned equipment. Promptly report, to immediate supervisor, all accidents involving truck, personal injury, or property damage and complete all necessary paperwork.
• Perform daily walk around inspection of vehicle, checking air, water, oil and other items to maintain equipment in good operating condition. Report any problems immediately to the supervisor.
• Ensure truck cab and box are clean and personal items are removed daily.
• Plan daily routing based on pick-ups assigned and make all calls scheduled, including boxes. 5. You are a personal representative of The Salvation Army.
  • You are therefore to ensure that all customers are treated courteously, donations are accepted or refused appropriately, and the “Manual for Production Assistants” is strictly followed. Any problem in pickups should be reported immediately to the dispatcher.
  • Required to maintain a professional appearance in compliance with company dress code.
• Maintain complete and accurate records.
• Must adhere to communication procedures.
• Responsible for loading and unloading of truck assigned and others as requested. Take proper care to secure and safely handle goods and materials during loading and unloading. Blankets, ropes, etc., are to be used to:
  • Avoid excessive movement of material during transit.
  • Avoid breakage, scratching, or other damage.
  • Make optimum use of available space.
• Provide assistance to Thrift Store personnel when delivering items to ensure proper placement and location within the store (i.e. hampers to processing area, furniture placed properly on sales floor, removal of trash, etc.).
• Instruct and supervise Truck Helper. Keep in mind that the Truck Helper is in a rehabilitation program and that good habits are taught by example as well as instruction.
• This position will support the work therapy program component of The Salvation Army Adult Rehabilitation Centers by providing beneficiaries with an example of professional conduct and work habits. Qualifications:

• Must be able to communicate effectively.
• Valid driver’s license for assigned vehicles and acceptable DMV record. Must pass driving test.
• Must be able to read maps and plan and prioritize daily route coverage.
• Must be able to use iPad with GPS, texting, and truck inspection report.
• Must have good communication and customer service skills.
• Medical card required depending on city and/or state requirement.
• Passing a DOT Physical is a requirement of the job, and failure to do so could result in immediate termination of employment.
