Job summary

OpenAI is seeking a Research and Advisory Partnerships Lead to build and manage external partnerships, advisory structures, and research collaborations that inform product and policy decisions. The role is hybrid in San Francisco and includes relocation assistance for new employees.

You will engage researchers, civil society organizations, and independent experts, establishing advisory councils and partnerships with academia.

Qualifications

• Experience building and managing external partnerships, advisory bodies, stakeholder engagement programs, or research collaborations in tech, academia, government, civil society, or related field.
• Strong understanding of social, ethical, and policy questions around AI and emerging tech.
• Familiarity with social science research and engagement with researchers across disciplines.
• Ability to translate complex external perspectives into clear, actionable guidance for product and policy teams.
• Experience building trust with external stakeholders while clarifying purpose and scope.
• Ability to work independently in a fast-moving environment and collaborate across teams.

Responsibilities

• Develop, launch, and manage external advisory councils and governance mechanisms for input on product and policy.
• Build and maintain relationships with external experts, researchers, civil society organizations, and stakeholders.
• Identify when external consultation improves internal decisions and tailor engagement strategies.
• Design and manage research partnerships with academic institutions and independent researchers.
• Stay current on academic research and translate findings into actionable recommendations for product, policy, and leadership teams.
• Work with product, policy, safety, legal, research, and communications teams to identify opportunities for external input.
• Develop processes for collecting, synthesizing, and sharing external guidance and tracing its impact on decisions.
• Manage contracts, budgets, confidentiality, governance, and conflicts of interest with internal partners.
• Prepare briefing materials and recommendations for senior leaders on external perspectives and research findings.
