The Product Owner is an experienced product knowledge and analysis expert that oversees and directs all requirements elaboration activities related to the delivery of one or more of our most complex Products (or Services) within a Product Line, ensuring they are aligned with the Product Roadmap defined by the Product Managers.

This role is a process and analysis expert, subject matter expert, and thought leader, providing consultancy to the engineering and business teams.

The role works closely with Product Management and Agile Teams to facilitate the translation of the Program backlog from Features into executable User Stories, to prepare for the release or Program Increment (PI) Planning meeting, and to oversee the quality of User Story delivery (including defect resolution).

This role streamlines the execution of program priorities to maximize product value in support of CRO business needs and in compliance with CRO SOPs, ensuring an effective Product release.

Analysis responsibilities may include business process, product requirements, technology requirements/technical enablers, UX and personas, and non-functional requirements. This role is a key senior member of the Agile Team, is responsible for prioritizing the team backlog.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Engage with senior R&D, Product Management, Users and business stakeholders to ensure requirements analysis supports the execution of critical and transformative business functions, escalating and resolving omissions or discrepancies as necessary.
  • Work with Product Managers to ensure that Agile teams understand the vision for the product, the link to business strategy, and the voice of the customer and that the releases from the product development teams achieve desired business objectives as defined by the Product Management team.
  • Ensure User Stories and product requirements meet the market needs and align to the Product/Technical Enabler Roadmap.
  • Inspire and motivate the wider Product Owner team and Agile Teams to deliver innovative and exciting solutions with an appropriate sense of urgency.
  • Promote the use of One CRO system tools and applications wherever possible to avoid system / feature duplication
  • Adhere to PLC/DLC SOPs avoiding deviations wherever possible.
  • Work closely with Product Managers, SMEs and other stakeholders to support the creation of unambiguous Features with input from Architects & Engineering.

  • Ensure requirements are clearly understood by the development teams and captured in the appropriate tool.
  • Collaborate with the Agile team to prioritize the backlog of User Stories to align with Sprints and enable release or Program Increment (PI) Planning.
  • Understand the scope of the upcoming enabler work and collaborate with Architects and Engineering to assist with decision-making and sequencing.
  • Collaborate with the Agile Team to detail acceptance criteria and acceptance tests.
  • Manage and maintain an appropriately sized and prioritized team backlog of User Stories (including defects and enablers) for implementation.
  • Identify, document and coordinate dependencies with the Engineering Lead, Release Train Engineer (RTE), and other Product Owners (POs).
  • Work with development and technical leads and the wider Product Owner team to determine scope and priorities for product development cycles.
  • Prepare for and participate in release or Product Increment (PI) Planning, including program backlog refinement, updates to the team backlog and reviewing and contributing to the program vision, roadmap, and product content presentations, assist the team in creating specific objectives for the upcoming release or Program Increment (PI).
  • Provide the clarifications necessary to assist the team with their story estimates and sequencing.
  • Attend Scrum meetings, standups and release management meetings. Collect early feedback from Product Managers, SMEs and stakeholders throughout the development lifecycle. Act as the liaison between Product Management, SMEs and CRO’s development team.
  • Demonstrate Agile Team progress by showcasing completed User Stories for evaluation during sprint and system demos. Ensure the frequent, reliable, and continuous release of value-added solutions.
  • Communicate Product delivery risks (regulatory or other), operational deviations including summary root cause, and CAPA metrics to Product Management as necessary.
  • Support the Release Train Engineer (RTE) or Engineering Director in the production of metrics and KPIs to ensure the Product Increment or release is on the track.
  • Support the Release Train Engineer (RTE) or Engineering Director in the management of the release process for a Product, including coordinating the business and Engineering teams, to develop and launch a Product on time and on budget.
  • Where applicable, lead a team of Product Owners building new or extending existing products. Mentor other Product Owners and engineering staff. Provide training on new analysis techniques, analysis tools, and documentation standards.

OTHER DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Ensure timely compliance with training completion/documentation.
  • Assist with developing training plans and training new members of the Product Owner team.
  • Perform other duties, assignments, or special projects as time and/or circumstances necessitate.

QUALIFICATIONS AND SKILLS NEEDED:

  • Effective communication skills; written and oral in English and working with and leading cross functional teams
  • For those positions managing (medical) devices, these additional qualifications apply:
  • Experience with (medical) devices and related technologies
  • Experience creating medical data management, data transfer and data storage systems including relevant standards
  • Experience creating medical devices including documentation (technical file) for CE marketing, FDA 510(k) and other country approvals
  • Experience with GMP, GCP, 21 CFR Part 11, MDD; preferably trained as Medical Device Consultant

Education:

  • Bachelor’s degree (business or science-related field preferred)
  • Certificate in Business Analysis Practice or IIBA/IREB qualifications or equivalent
  • Certificate in process documentation such as Business Process Model and Notation (BPMN), or equivalent.

Experience:

  • 6+ years proven track record of successful Agile IT/technology requirements delivery
  • 6+ years of experience in managing technology Product definition.
  • Experience of managing and developing other Product Owners and/or coaching wider team members
  • Extensive experience defining, developing, and launching successful Products
  • Strong task management and planning skills
  • Good software development awareness utilizing Agile, DevOps and CI / CD
  • Experience of the whole project life cycle, with an ability to operate in the conceptual design stage, in the depths of system testing, and at each stage in between
  • Experience working within an application lifecycle management tool (ALM)
  • A degree of technical proficiency and an ability to understand complex business problems/opportunities and support/facilitate production of technical solution options.
  • Excellent communication skills with the ability to explain complex technological solutions in simple terms to both clients and wider business stakeholders
  • Experience of collaborating with resources over disparate geographical areas
  • Excellent client facing and business stakeholder negotiating skills
  • A positive and motivating mental attitude, a team player with excellent customer care and interpersonal skills
  • Have a strong presence and the ability to influence decision making at all levels
  • Experience of dealing with IT systems in clinical environments
  • Articulate, self-motivated and possesses the ability to prioritize efficiently and handle escalated queries while under pressure
