Job summary

ABB Electrification Installation Products seeks an R&D Engineer to join our Premier Products R&D team in Memphis, TN. You’ll act as a technical backbone, supporting innovation and maintaining products for leading brands while collaborating with manufacturing, field teams, and customers.

You will conduct lab testing, prepare engineering docs, and guide cross-functional teams. The role emphasizes hands-on problem solving, quality, and customer satisfaction, with opportunities to influence product

Qualifications

  • 3–5 years of experience in a mechanical or electrical engineering role, with background in product design and/or sustaining engineering.
  • Proficiency in 3D modeling software (CREO preferred), with solid knowledge of general product design principles and test plan development.
  • Strong cross-functional communication and interpersonal skills, with a proactive ownership mindset and genuine enthusiasm for continuous learning.
  • Fluency in English (written and spoken) is required.
  • Must hold valid work authorization to work for ABB in the United States.
  • Preferred: Hands-on experience executing and/or performing product and product comparison testing.
  • Familiarity with agency certification processes and standards applicable to industrial products.
  • Intermediate Spanish proficiency — an advantage for cross-functional and cross-regional communication.

Responsibilities

  • Serve as SME for assigned product lines, maintaining deep knowledge of product design, agency certifications, materials, and manufacturing processes.
  • Perform detailed part evaluations across materials (metals, plastics) using methods like injection molding, stamping, casting, extrusion, machining, and additive manufacturing.
  • Prepare and maintain engineering documentation including drawings, BOMs, material specifications, instruction sheets, and quality plans; provide progress updates to executives.
  • Provide sustaining engineering and R&D support through root cause analysis and product optimization.
  • Guide test lab personnel in testing per agency standards and perform internal testing as needed.
  • Act as a technical resource for cross-functional teams including Product Management and manufacturing plants.
