Vimo (formerly GetInsured) has operated since 2005, building technology for health insurance shopping and enrollment. Following the acquisition of Change & Innovation Agency in 2021, it expanded into government IT modernisation, offering SaaS platforms, contact centre services, and AI tools that help states run health insurance exchanges and administer safety-net programs including Medicaid, SNAP, childcare, and unemployment insurance. The company employs 501–1,000 people and describes its mission as making public services simple, accessible, and human-centred.
The role
This is a contract Product Designer position based on-site in the San Francisco Bay Area. The role sits within a design team that hires for craft and judgment, and expects designers to use AI tools as a standard part of their workflow. You would work with a high degree of independence, receiving roughly a few hours of direction per week and carrying work forward on your own.
What you would do
- Frame ambiguous design problems, explore directions, and produce wireframes, prototypes, and polished interfaces for web and mobile, making the critical judgments about what ships.
- Design UX patterns for AI-driven features: conversational and agentic flows, prompt and input design, streaming and loading states, confidence and citation display, human-in-the-loop review, error recovery, and graceful fallbacks across eligibility, enrollment, and case-management products.
- Build interactive, code-backed prototypes and demos independently using prompt-driven and generative tools (Figma, Figma Make, Claude, ChatGPT, AI codegen) so stakeholders can test real behaviour rather than static mockups.
- Use AI to synthesise analytics, research data, and user feedback into insights, then translate those insights into design direction, validating AI output against source material.
- Maintain and extend shared design system patterns, tokens, and UI kits, and help move the team toward a design-to-code workflow (for example, connecting components to code via Figma Code Connect).
- Partner with product, engineering, QA, data science, and business stakeholders to deliver solutions together.
- Advocate for inclusive design to the latest WCAG standards and hold AI-assisted output to the same accessibility bar.
What they are looking for
- A strong portfolio showing complex problems solved through interaction design, visual design, and UI prototyping, with your thinking and judgment visible.
- 5 or more years of professional UX/product design experience in software or information design.
- Strong interaction and visual design judgment, and the ability to distinguish good work from generic work.
- Highly self-directed: able to work independently with business stakeholders and product managers, bring a UX point of view, and deliver strong work with minimal oversight.
- Hands-on experience with design systems and component libraries.
- Solid understanding of semantic HTML/CSS and mobile responsiveness, and the ability to translate Figma specs into front-end guidance.
- Clear communication, the ability to articulate and defend design decisions, and a collaborative approach across distributed teams and time zones.
- Fluency with Figma and Adobe Creative Cloud.
- Practical use of generative UI and codegen tools (Figma Make, v0.dev, Lovable, or similar) in real projects.
- Strong prompting judgment with LLMs (Claude, ChatGPT, Gemini): decomposing design problems into effective prompts, iterating toward usable results, and recognising when output is wrong, generic, biased, or inaccessible.
- A responsible mindset about AI, including reviewing generated work for bias, privacy, and accessibility issues, which is especially important in government and safety-net contexts.
- Preferred: experience connecting a design system to AI codegen via Figma Code Connect, or building agents for design workflows; enough AI-feature literacy to collaborate with engineers on model APIs, RAG, agents, MCP/tool use, and evals; mobile app design and hands-on moderated/unmoderated user testing; experience in regulated, high-stakes, or accessibility-critical domains; a degree in Design, HCI, Arts, or a related field (or equivalent practical experience).
