Position Summary

Reporting to the Engineering Manager, the Product Design Engineer – Cable Assemblies is responsible for interpreting customer electrical requirements and designing and developing technical documentation for cable assemblies, including 2D drawings, test specifications, and Bills of Materials (BOM). The role also involves supporting manufacturing engineering with technical issues and collaborating with product management for cost estimation.

Essential Responsibilities

  • Design wire harness drawings based on electrical, mechanical, and environmental requirements, including selection of connectors, back shells, boots, wire, braid, terminals, etc.
  • Develop and maintain BOMs and prepare manufacturing assembly drawings.
  • Support drawing changes, production issues, supplier issues, and quality concerns related to cable assemblies.
  • Prepare cost estimates for new cable assemblies, including NRE and equipment needs.
  • Design overmolded transitions and interface with mold designers.
  • Develop electrical test plans meeting customer performance requirements.
  • Assist procurement with component selection and sourcing options.
  • Communicate directly with customer technical personnel to interpret design requirements.
  • Review contracts related to customer specifications and manage product lifecycle documentation.
  • Participate as a team member in product testing and qualification within the Product Evaluation Lab.

Required Position Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical or Electrical Engineering or equivalent.
  • Minimum of 5 years experience in Mil/Aero cable assembly product design and manufacturing.
  • Proficiency in creating cable assembly drawings and documentation.
  • Knowledge of MIL/IPC standards (e.g., IPC/WHMA-A-620, IPC-610, NASA 8739.4, SAE-AS50881).
  • Experience with wiring diagrams, EMI/EMC requirements, and cable components.
  • Proficiency in 3D CAD software (Creo, SolidWorks, NX, etc.).
  • Understanding of ASME Y14.5 GD&T principles.
  • Strong multitasking, communication, and teamwork skills.
  • Willingness to travel up to 10% and U.S. citizenship due to export document visibility requirements.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in aerospace & defense industry cable assembly design.
  • Proficiency in CREO Parametric or similar CAD software.
  • Knowledge of manufacturing processes for cable fabrication.
  • Experience with copper and fiber optic cable assemblies.
  • Familiarity with DFSS, DfM, FMEA, DOE, and RCCA principles.
