Product Application Engineer – Battery Management Systems (BMS)
Position Summary
The Product Application Engineer is responsible for the definition, development, integration, validation, and customer application support of Battery Management Systems (BMS) for electrified mobility and energy storage applications. This role translates customer, safety, regulatory, manufacturing, and business requirements into system architecture, technical specifications, validation plans, and production support solutions.
The position supports battery programs across industrial, railway, commercial vehicle, heavy-duty, off-highway, construction, and passenger EV applications. Based in Troy, MI, with occasional travel to customers, suppliers, and testing facilities.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead BMS development for battery systems across multiple mobility and industrial applications.
- Define system architecture, operating concepts, interfaces, diagnostics, communications, and control strategies.
- Translate customer and program requirements into hardware, software, safety, validation, and service requirements.
- Develop and maintain system requirements, technical specifications, interface definitions, test plans, and engineering documentation.
- Support battery pack architecture, high-voltage systems, thermal management, cell balancing, fault management, and battery safety strategies.
- Collaborate with hardware, software, validation, quality, manufacturing, and program teams throughout product development.
Requirements, Validation & Testing
- Gather, document, and manage customer, regulatory, safety, manufacturing, and service requirements.
- Maintain requirements traceability through development and validation.
- Define verification and validation strategies and coordinate testing activities.
- Develop and execute test plans for BMS functionality, communications, diagnostics, environmental testing, and system integration.
- Support HIL/SIL testing, CAN communication analysis, data collection, calibration, and troubleshooting.
- Lead root cause analysis and support corrective actions for product, validation, manufacturing, and field issues.
Safety, Compliance & Certification
- Support compliance with applicable automotive, railway, industrial, functional safety, cybersecurity, and battery regulations.
- Participate in safety analyses, DFMEA, FMEA, FTA, risk assessments, and safety documentation.
- Support certification and validation activities for battery systems and high-voltage applications.
- Ensure compliance with company quality, safety, environmental, and document control procedures.
Project Leadership & Cross-Functional Coordination
- Coordinate activities across systems, software, electronics, mechanical, validation, manufacturing, quality, purchasing, suppliers, and program management teams.
- Manage engineering changes, technical risks, requirements updates, and project deliverables.
- Support customer communication, technical reviews, integration activities, commissioning, troubleshooting, and launch support.
- Contribute to continuous improvement initiatives and technical best practices.
Qualifications
Education
- Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Electronics Engineering, Mechatronics, Automotive Engineering, Systems Engineering, Computer Engineering, or related field required.
- Master's degree preferred.
Experience
- Minimum 5 years of experience in systems engineering, battery systems, electrified powertrains, automotive, railway, commercial vehicle, industrial, or related applications.
- Minimum 3 years of Battery Management System (BMS) development experience preferred.
- Experience with lithium-ion battery systems and high-voltage battery packs.
- Experience leading cross-functional engineering projects.
- Exposure to commercial vehicles, off-highway equipment, industrial battery systems, railway, or passenger EV applications is highly desirable.
Technical Skills
- Strong knowledge of Battery Management Systems, lithium-ion batteries, battery safety, diagnostics, controls, and communication networks.
- Understanding of systems engineering, requirements management, traceability, verification, and validation processes.
- Knowledge of embedded systems, power electronics, sensors, controllers, and battery integration.
- Experience with CAN, CAN FD, J1939, UDS, HIL testing, diagnostics, and data analysis tools.
- Familiarity with DFMEA, FMEA, FTA, safety analysis, and risk management methodologies.
- Strong communication and technical writing skills.
- Excellent analytical and problem-solving abilities.
