Job summary

Johnson Matthey is seeking a Process Engineer in West Deptford, NJ to drive improvements in existing and new chemical processes. You will design reactors, specify materials, and develop control systems while training operators on safe operation.

You will update procedures, conduct RCAs, support turnarounds, and contribute to continuous improvement across safety, operability, and efficiency. A strong chemistry background and 5+ years in chemical processing are required.

Qualifications

• B.S. in Chemical Engineering, Chemistry or a related field.
• 5+ years of engineering experience in a chemical process environment.
• Precious metal industry experience is desirable.
• Strong understanding of basic chemistry principles.

Responsibilities

• Update procedures for existing and new processes.
• Commission and optimize equipment and train operators on safe operation.
• Design reactors and systems and specify materials of construction.
• Prepare drawings and sketches of reaction systems and document all aspects.
• Design control systems and instrumentation for the process.
• Support operational needs with area supervision.
• Participate in root cause analysis of issues and incidents.
• Support turnaround work, safety evaluations, and continuous improvement.
• Serve as SME for PHAs, MOCs and other analyses.
• Review/update batch sheets to drive process improvements.
• Provide other engineering services as needed.

At Johnson Matthey’s West Deptford NJ facility, Process Engineers report to the Process Engineering Lead in the Engineering Department and are responsible for the improvement of both existing and new processes and the implementation of innovative technology to improve safety, operability, efficiency, capacity, and yield.

The Role:

• Updating procedures for existing and new processes
• Completing projects by commissioning and optimizing the equipment, and once completed, helps with training operators on how to operate the process safely
• Designing reactors and reactor systems and specifying materials of construction
• Preparing drawings and sketches of reaction systems and documenting all aspects of the system
• Designing control systems and suitable instrumentation required for the process
• Working closely with area supervision to support operational needs
• Performing or participating in Root Cause Analysis of operational problems, unplanned events, etc.
• Participating in incident investigations
• Supporting turnaround work, safety evaluations, and continuous improvement activities
• Serving as Subject Matter Expert for PHAs (Process Hazard Analysis), MOCs (Management of Change) and various other studies associated with existing processes and new projects
• Reviewing / updating batch sheets to effect process improvements
• Providing other engineering services needed by the organization from time to time

Key Skills:

• B.S. in Chemical Engineering, Chemistry or similar required
• 5+ years of experience in engineering in a chemical process environment
• Precious metal industry experience – Desired
• Understanding of basic chemistry principles
