Job description

Industry: Semiconductor Manufacturing / Semiconductor Construction

Opportunity to work on one of the largest semiconductor construction and manufacturing projects on the West Coast.

We are seeking an experienced Process Safety Engineer to support the design, construction, commissioning, and development of a major semiconductor manufacturing facility in Syracuse, New York.

This role is ideal for a Process Safety Engineer, Chemical Engineer, EHS Engineer, or Process Safety Management (PSM) professional with experience supporting semiconductor manufacturing, high-tech manufacturing, chemical processing, or other complex industrial facilities.

The Process Safety Engineer will provide technical leadership for semiconductor base build facility systems, including bulk gas systems, specialty gas systems, hazardous chemical delivery systems, chemical distribution, waste systems, and process utilities.

This position will also play a key role in the development, implementation, and sustainment of Process Safety Management (PSM) programs and compliance with OSHA 29 CFR 1910.119, EPA Risk Management Program (RMP), and applicable semiconductor safety standards.

Key Responsibilities
  • Lead and support process safety engineering activities for semiconductor manufacturing and construction projects.
  • Review the design of semiconductor basebuild facilities, bulk gases, specialty gases, chemical delivery systems, hazardous materials systems, and waste infrastructure.
  • Lead and facilitate Process Hazard Analysis (PHA), HAZOP, FMEA, What-If Analysis, and other formal risk assessments.
  • Support Process Safety Management (PSM) and Risk-Based Process Safety (RBPS) programs.
  • Manage and support Management of Change (MOC) activities for equipment, facilities, processes, procedures, and chemical systems.
  • Participate in incident investigations, root cause analysis, corrective action development, and process safety improvement initiatives.
  • Conduct detailed engineering design reviews for semiconductor fabrication equipment, facility systems, and chemical processes.
  • Review P&IDs, engineering drawings, schematics, specifications, process flow diagrams, and technical documentation.
  • Identify potential process hazards and recommend appropriate engineering controls, safeguards, interlocks, alarms, ventilation, containment, and hazard mitigation strategies.
  • Support tool installation, equipment commissioning, technology transfer, and startup activities.
  • Develop and review Safety Release Documents (SRDs), flammability studies, hazard analyses, and process safety documentation.
  • Monitor process safety metrics and drive closure of findings from audits, PHAs, HAZOPs, investigations, design reviews, and compliance assessments.
  • Maintain technical and regulatory documentation, including vendor information, engineering records, installation packages, safety documentation, and compliance records.
  • Collaborate with engineering, construction, facilities, operations, equipment, manufacturing, EHS, and commissioning teams throughout the project lifecycle.
  • Provide technical guidance and promote a strong process safety and EHS culture across the organization.
Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in ANY Engineering Discipline, Safety Engineering, Chemistry, Mechanical Engineering, or a related technical discipline, or equivalent relevant experience.
  • 2+ years of Process Safety, PSM, Chemical Engineering, EHS Engineering, or related experience within semiconductor manufacturing, high-tech manufacturing, chemical processing, pharmaceuticals, petrochemical, or another complex industrial environment.
  • Strong knowledge of Process Safety Management (PSM) principles and practices.
  • Working knowledge of OSHA 29 CFR 1910.119 – Process Safety Management.
  • Working knowledge of EPA 40 CFR Part 68 – Risk Management Program (RMP).
  • Experience conducting or facilitating PHA, HAZOP, FMEA, What-If Analysis, MOC, and formal risk assessments.
  • Experience working with hazardous chemicals, toxic gases, flammable gases, specialty gases, bulk gases, and chemical delivery systems.
  • Ability to read and interpret P&IDs, engineering drawings, process flow diagrams, schematics, equipment specifications, and technical documentation.
  • Strong understanding of engineering controls, hazard mitigation, process safeguards, and risk reduction strategies.
  • Strong analytical, technical, written, and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to lead cross-functional engineering and process safety discussions.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Previous semiconductor industry experience strongly preferred.
  • Experience supporting semiconductor fabs, wafer fabrication facilities, advanced manufacturing facilities, or high-tech construction projects.
