Job summary

Marathon Petroleum Company LP is seeking a Process Controls Technician at the Texas City site. The role focuses on designing and maintaining control strategies to optimize unit performance and reliability, with responsibilities spanning DCS, SIS, PLCs, and instrumentation across multiple platforms.

The technician will troubleshoot hardware, software, and network components and work with operations and maintenance to resolve issues.

Qualifications

  • Associate's degree or equivalent with relevant experience required.
  • Two+ years of industrial control systems experience preferred.
  • Must be able to respond to emergencies during off-hours and maintain on-call status.
  • Valid driver's license required.

Responsibilities

  • Designs, implements, and maintains process control strategies to optimize unit performance.
  • Troubleshoots control system issues including hardware, software, and network components.
  • Collaborates with operations, engineering and maintenance to resolve challenges and support operators.
  • Maintains and optimizes control platforms (Honeywell Experion PKS, TDC3000, DeltaV, Ovation, ABB) and upgrades systems.
  • Maintains SIS and PLCs, updates logic, and conducts testing.
  • Develops control narratives, diagrams, and system documentation.
  • Manages control-related projects from scope to commissioning.
  • Develops operator graphics and HMIs for DCS, SIS, PLC, and SCADA systems.
  • Maintains and troubleshoots industrial networks.
  • Provides on-call and outage/turnaround support for control systems.

POSITION SUMMARY

The Galveston Bay Refinery has an opening for a Process Controls Technician. This position will report directly to the Process Control Manager.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Designs, implements, and maintains process control strategies to optimize unit performance and reliability.
  • Troubleshoots and resolves control system issues, including hardware, software, and network components.
  • Collaborates with operations, engineering and maintenance teams to resolve operational challenges. Develops and maintains relationships with console operators.
  • Maintains and optimizes Honeywell Experion PKS, TDC 3000, Emerson DeltaV, Emerson Ovation, and ABB Symphony Plus DCS platforms, including configuration, troubleshooting, and system upgrades to support safe and efficient refinery operations.
  • Maintain and support Triconex SIS and Rockwell Automation PLCs, including logic modifications, and testing.
  • Develops and maintains control narratives, logic diagrams, and system documentation.
  • Manages controls-related projects, including scope development, vendor coordination, and commissioning.
  • Develop, modify, and maintain operator graphics and HMIs for DCS, SIS, PLC, and SCADA systems in accordance with refinery standards
  • Maintain and troubleshoot industrial networks.
  • Provides on-call and outage/turnaround support for control systems.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Associate's Degree in Electrical or Instrument Technology or High School Diploma or GED with five (5) years relevant experience required. (Education must be obtained/completed prior to start date)
  • Two (2) years or more of experience with industrial control systems required.
  • Ability to maintain on-call status and respond to emergencies as necessary during off-hours.
  • A valid Driver's License is required.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Proficiency in Honeywell Experion, TDC3000, Emerson DeltaV, Emerson Ovation, Triconex SIS, or Rockwell Automation PLCs.
  • Previous Refining Process Controls experience.
