Job summary

Kaneka Americas Holding, Inc. invites an Engineering Intern to gain hands-on experience with DCS/PLC systems in Pasadena, TX. You will learn hardware, software, alarms, and safety interlocks while supporting daily control activities and project work.

Under mentoring, you will draft MOC changes, build graphics on the DCS simulator, and help troubleshoot process issues. Proficiency with MS Office is required and some college in ME/EE is preferred.

Qualifications

• Some college in Mechanical or Electrical Engineering preferred.
• 0–1 years of coding experience; knowledge of any programming language preferred.
• Proficiency in MS Word, PowerPoint, Outlook, and Excel.

Responsibilities

• Learn DCS/PLC system software through on-the-job training.
• Study DCS hardware I/O, controllers, servers, and the control network.
• Assist Process Control Engineer with active control projects.
• Draft MOC's and build code/graphics on the DCS/PLC Simulator.
• Troubleshoot day-to-day plant equipment issues related to controls.
• Propose modifications to improve performance, safety, or reliability.
• Monitor DCS/PLC alarms and update alarm surveys.
• Complete assigned projects and present results to management.
• Meet monthly with DCS Manager to discuss progress.

Description

Become proficient in navigating and programming the assigned DCS/PLC system software through on the job training and self-study.

Learn the basics of the DCS/PLC hardware, including I/O modules, controllers, servers, and the control network.

Learn the basics of the assigned unit chemical process and equipment through on the job training and self-study.

Learn the basics of safety systems and how safety interlocks are implemented via DCS/PLC logic.

Learn about field instruments, devices and sensors and utilize the knowledge in troubleshooting process upsets.

Assist Process Control Engineer in implementing active controls projects in process units.

Assist Process Control Engineer in drafting MOC's for DCS changes and building code and graphics on the DCS/PLC Simulator to test them.

Assist Process Control Engineer in troubleshooting day-to-day issues with plant equipment that may be attributed to process controls.

Propose modifications to DCS/Systems equipment that improve plant performance, safety, or reliability, and reduce costs.

Monitor and address DCS/PLC alarms, update alarm surveys, propose fixes, and work with unit engineers to execute action items.

Develop and complete a project as assigned by the project mentor, and develop a Powerpoint presentation on the results of the project to be given to management at the end of the internship period.

Meet with DCS Manager monthly to assess progress against expectations.
