Job description

Process Controls Engineer

Position Overview

We are seeking a Process Controls Engineer to design, implement and optimize control systems for chemical processing facilities. The role focuses on developing robust PLC/DCS control architectures, integrating field instrumentation and HMIs, and ensuring safe, efficient process operation. The successful candidate will work across multidisciplinary project teams to deliver control system design, commissioning, and continuous improvement initiatives that meet production, safety and regulatory objectives.

Key Responsibilities
  • Design and develop control system architectures using PLC and DCS platforms to support chemical process operations.
  • Configure and program PLCs and HMI systems, develop control logic, function blocks, and ladder or structured text code as required.
  • Integrate field devices and instrumentation (I&C) including transmitters, actuators, and communication protocols such as Modbus and other industrial networks.
  • Create and maintain functional specifications, control narratives, loop diagrams, IO lists, and other control documentation.
  • Lead and support FAT/SAT, commissioning and start-up activities, including on-site troubleshooting and tuning of control loops.
  • Collaborate with process engineers, project managers and operations to translate process requirements into control strategies and improvements.
  • Perform hazard and operability reviews (HAZOP), safety instrumented system (SIS) interaction assessments and ensure compliance with industry standards and regulatory requirements.
  • Provide technical leadership on control system projects, mentor junior engineers, and coordinate with vendors and contractors.
  • Analyze process data to identify optimization opportunities, implement advanced control strategies (e.g., PID tuning, multivariable control) and drive continuous improvement initiatives.
  • Develop training materials and deliver operator training for new and updated control systems.
Qualifications
  • Bachelors degree in Electrical, Control, Chemical or Mechanical Engineering or related field; advanced degree preferred.
  • 5+ years of experience in controls engineering with demonstrated experience in chemical processing or related industries.
  • Proven experience with PLC programming and configuration (e.g., Allen-Bradley, Siemens or similar) and DCS platforms.
  • Hands-on experience with HMI/SCADA development and operator interface design.
  • Familiarity with industrial communication protocols, particularly Modbus, Ethernet/IP, Profibus, or similar.
  • Strong working knowledge of I&C instrumentation, loop tuning, control valve sizing and calibration.
  • Experience leading medium-to-large control system projects, including vendor coordination and commissioning.
  • Solid understanding of process engineering concepts and ability to translate process needs into control strategies.
  • Experience with safety standards and practices (e.g., ISA, IEC 61511, NFPA) and participation in HAZOP/SIL assessments.
  • Excellent problem-solving, communication, and teamwork skills; ability to work effectively across disciplines and mentor junior staff.
