City of Moss Point is recruiting entry-level firefighter trainees to participate in classroom and practical training for fire prevention, rescue, and equipment maintenance. Entry-level staff train toward certification in fire, safety, and emergency response areas, with duties including station upkeep and public education activities as assigned.

Qualifications

  • Must be 18 years or older at time of employment.
  • Must possess, or be able to obtain by time of hire, a valid State driver's license without record of suspension or revocation.
  • No felony convictions or disqualifying criminal histories.
  • U.S. citizen; must be able to read and write English.
  • Must be of good moral character and industrious habits.

Responsibilities

Job description

SUMMARY:
Individuals of this class shall participate in classroom and practical training in the performance of a variety of technical tasks such as but not limited to: support of fire prevention and suppression, medical emergency and hazardous materials handling functions; to learn the operation and maintenance of assorted fire and rescue apparatus and equipment; and to participate in fire prevention and station and equipment maintenance activities.

This is the entry level/recruit classification. This class is distinguished from an experienced certified firefighter by the primary assignment to training activities and by the performance of the most routine tasks and duties assigned to positions within this classification. Employees in this classification typically work under immediate supervision and are trained such that they meet the State of Mississippi Minimum Standards for firefighters. Individuals of this category may have limited or no directly related work experience under this training class.

Responsibilities

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Attend classroom and practical training in the performance of a variety of duties relating to fire prevention and suppression under immediate supervision.

Learn how to respond to emergency calls; assist in the provision of appropriate services as required including emergency rescue and fire suppression; prepare reports regarding emergency incidents as assigned.

Learn and practice the operation, inspection, minor repair and preventative maintenance and performance of the Moss Point Fire Department apparatus and equipment.

Learn and practice how to assist in the rescue of trapped or injured persons; assist in the operation of numerous types of rescue, emergency and fire suppression equipment as necessary.
Participate in assigned training and to attain appropriate certification covering the areas of fire alarms and communications, emergency medical care, fire behavior, rescue, safety, overhaul and inspections and the use of equipment and techniques including portable extinguisher, SCBA, forcible entry, ventilation, ropes, hoses, nozzles and appliances, fire streams and sprinklers.

Performs general maintenance work in the upkeep of fire facilities and equipment; cleans and washes walls and floors; cares for grounds around station; makes minor repairs; washes, hangs and dries hose; washes, cleans, polishes, maintains and test apparatus and equipment. Ensure that appropriate conditions are maintained at assigned station; ensure that all equipment and apparatus is in a constant state of readiness for emergency calls.

Study street and apartment locations in assigned area; study building plans and fire prevention systems in buildings in assigned area; study pre-emergency plans.

PERIPHERAL DUTIES
Assists with tours of assigned fire station, demonstrate fire equipment and apparatus, and participate in other educational programs for various groups and general public.

Perform other duties as assigned.
