Job summary

County of Berks is seeking a Probation/Parole Officer to enforce court orders, supervise offenders, and promote community safety across Berks County. The role uses risk assessment tools, develops case plans, and coordinates services to support long-term change.

Hires start at an hourly rate and advance through structured pay grades as experience grows. Candidates must meet education requirements, hold a valid driver’s license, and be willing to work outside standard hours.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or GED.
• Bachelor’s degree with at least 18 credits in behavioral or social science.
• Equivalent combination of experience and training.
• Valid state-issued driver’s license and access to a vehicle.

Responsibilities

• Supervise offenders through office, home, field, employment contacts.
• Document case-related contacts and prepare progress reports.
• Assess risk, develop case plans, provide supervision per risk level.
• Refer offenders to treatment agencies and maintain agency relationships.
• Use motivational interviewing to encourage change.
• Utilize cognitive-behavioral techniques to modify behavior.
• Monitor compliance and assist with court-ordered obligations.
• Testify in court and assist with offender apprehension when needed.
• Provide intake services and prepare pre-sentencing reports.
