Job summary

The City of Hutchinson, Kansas is seeking a Probation Officer for the Municipal Court to administer and monitor probation and diversion cases. You will explain conditions, coordinate referrals, and maintain case records to support accountability and community safety.

The Probation Officer is responsible for administering, monitoring and documenting Municipal Court probation and diversion cases in accordance with court orders, diversion agreements and program policies. The position explains court-ordered conditions and diversion requirements; monitors compliance; coordinates referrals and services; maintains complete and accurate case records; and provides timely, fact-based status information to the Court. The work supports client accountability, consistent administration of programs, timely case disposition, and community safety.

A Day in the Life
  • Schedule and conduct initial probation and diversion appointments to review and sign required paperwork; explain program conditions, deadlines, payment obligations, reporting expectations, and consequences of noncompliance.
  • Develop and maintain case-management plans consistent with court orders, diversion agreements and program policies.
  • Monitor compliance with conditions including restitution, fines and costs, community service, treatment, education programs, substance testing, no-contact provisions, license-related requirements, and other court-ordered obligations.
  • Schedule and conduct in-person, telephone, virtual, or electronic check-ins with defendants according to established supervision standards.
  • Verify completion of court-ordered and diversion requirements through receipts, provider reports, certificates, service logs, testing results, and other reliable documentation.
  • Identify barriers to compliance and provide appropriate referrals to community resources, treatment providers, educational programs, and social-service agencies.
  • Maintain professional working relationships with judges, court staff, prosecutors, defense counsel, law-enforcement agencies, treatment providers, community-service organizations, and other stakeholders.
  • Document all material contacts, compliance activities, payments, referrals, violations, and case actions accurately and promptly in the court case-management system.
  • Prepare case-status summaries, compliance reports, violation documentation, and other materials needed for court hearings or prosecutorial review.
  • Recommend successful completion, discharge, dismissal, extension, modification, termination, revocation, or other case action within established authority and procedure.
  • Assist with establishing payment plans and monitoring compliance with financial obligations.
  • Maintain confidentiality of criminal-justice information, court records, personally identifiable information, and protected health or treatment information.
  • Apply program policies consistently, communicate respectfully with all participants.
  • Participate in training, policy development, and process-improvement efforts related to probation, diversion, and case management operations.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
What You Will Need For Success
  • Education - A high school diploma or GED is required. Associate's or Bachelor's degree in criminal justice, social work, behavioral science, public administration, or a related field is preferred, but not required.
  • Experience - One year of experience in court, probation, diversion, corrections, law enforcement, case management, soical services, or a closely related field, an equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.
  • Certifications/License - Ability to obtain and maintain any required criminal-justice information-system access, certifications or training. NCIC limited access certification required within six months of hire.
