Job Description

Developmental Underfill Opportunity: This position may be filled as a developmental underfill at the Probate Examiner job profile level. See the Minimum Qualifications section for details. The hourly wage for the Probate Examiner is $26.19 - $40.63.

Benefits To You
  • We pay 95% to 99% of medical insurance premiums for full-time employees [OR up to 99% of medical insurance premiums for part‑time employees], including mental health coverage.
  • The hourly equivalent for this position is $28.87 - $44.79. [OR The annual salary for this position is $60,049 - $93,160.]
  • 10 paid holidays, 2 floating holidays, 3 personal business days, separate sick and vacation paid leaves (prorated for part‑time employees), and other employee benefits such as optional insurances and flexible spending plans.
  • OJD will pay you a 5% allowance for bilingual skills (includes ASL) if you can pass a skills test and are assigned to use those skills on the job!

Location Highlights

The Judicial District is located in the southwest corner of Oregon and includes Coos and Curry counties. This region offers a variety of climates, stunning ocean views, and abundant opportunities for outdoor recreation such as hiking, boating, biking, and fishing. The courthouses are located in the cities of Coquille and Gold Beach.

Coos County is made up of the communities of Lakeside, North Bend, Coos Bay, Coquille, Myrtle Point, Powers, and Bandon. Curry County includes the communities of Langlois, Port Orford, Gold Beach, and Brookings.

Coquille, Oregon is the county seat in Coos County situated along the Coquille River. The area is known for its rich history, beautiful landscapes, and friendly community. The area got its name from the Coquille Native Americans that inhabited the area prior to the 1800’s. Coquille is 22 miles from the Oregon Coast and to the south is Myrtle Point and to the north is Coos Bay (Coos County’s largest city).

Gold Beach, Oregon is the county seat in Curry County and located on scenic Highway 101, tucked in between the Pacific Ocean, the Rogue River, and the Siskiyou Mountains. Incorporated in 1853 as Ellensburg, then renamed Gold Beach in 1890 due to the amount of gold found near the mouth of the Rogue River, the city is the perfect blend of solitude and adventure. 34 miles from the Oregon-California border, Gold Beach is full of adventure from the windswept ocean, wild and racing Rogue River, to the temperate rain forest inland. To the south of Gold Beach is Brookings, Curry Counties largest city.

Position Highlights

The Coos County Circuit Court in Coquille, Oregon and the Curry County Circuit Court in Gold Beach, Oregon, is hiring a Probate Commissioner (Probate Examiner Developmental Underfill Opportunity).

In this role…

You will be in charge of probate and protective proceeding matters for the entire District. You will prepare and sign orders for appointing visitor. Accept general and simple state filings, adult and minor protective petitions; accept and track filings of annual accounting, inventory, guardian reports, and case related documents. Review documents for accuracy, completeness, and determine compliance.

You will also assist all parties at the customer service counter via in‑person, phone, or email. Be a backup for the program coordinator in Aid and Assist matters for Coos County and may coordinate Aid and Assist matters in Curry County. You will act as backup for civil commitment cases and Notices for Mental Illness documents. Coordinate court appointed counsel and civil commitment hearings.

Perform courtroom duties including operating the For‑The‑Record (FTR) equipment. You will test the system, monitor the audio; monitor the creation of detailed log notes.

Assigned tasks may be changed to accommodate workload and organizational needs.

Probate Commissioner Minimum Qualifications

The qualified candidate must have a Bachelor’s degree in business, court administration, public administration, or a related field.

AND

At least three (3) years of professional legal secretarial, progressively responsible court support, or paralegal experience.

OR

Any combination of education and experience equivalent to seven (7) years of experience that typically supports the knowledge, skills, and abilities for the position.

Probate Examiner Minimum Qualifications

(These must be evident in your resume or work history.)

The qualified candidate must have a Bachelor’s degree in business, court administration, public administration, or related field.

AND

At least two (2) years of professional legal secretarial, progressively responsible court support, public or private law firm, public guardian, public conservator, fiduciary or paralegal experience.

OR

Any combination of education and experience equivalent to six (6) years of experience that typically support the knowledge, skills, and abilities for the position.

Working Conditions
  • This position’s work location is dependent on the residence location of the hired candidate.
  • This is a full‑time position, and the work schedule is 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Monday through Friday. This position is eligible for overtime compensation for hours worked in excess of 40 per work week.
  • Occasional after‑hours or overtime work may be required.
  • Frequent phone and in‑person contact with people from diverse backgrounds.
