Department Summary

The College of Arts and Sciences (CAS) is the intellectual hub ofthe University of Oregon, serving nearly two-thirds of allstudents. Home to more than 800 faculty across 50+ departments andprograms in the humanities, natural sciences, and social sciences,CAS is a dynamic and interdisciplinary academic community. Ourfaculty and advisors work closely with students to develop criticalthinking, analytical reasoning, and clear communication skills toaddress real-world challenges. The Department of Physics is an instructional and researchdepartment within the College of Arts and Sciences that supportssignificant research activities in a wide range of fields in thePhysics discipline. The department includes approximately 35teaching faculty in addition to emeritus faculty, research staff,graduate students, and professional/administrative staff. Thedepartment enrolls approximately 2,000 students per term, withapproximately 200 undergraduate Physics majors and 100 graduatestudents.
