Job description

Private Secondary Educator in Austin, TX

Description

A family in Austin is seeking an exceptional secondary educator to design and deliver a highly personalized, one-to-one educational program for a 15-year-old learner with dyslexia. The family recently relocated from the United Kingdom and is seeking a thoughtful educational partner who can build on prior learning while helping establish a clear, sustainable path through the remaining secondary years.

This is an opportunity to create a purposeful learning environment around one student’s needs, strengths, and goals. The educator will combine strong teaching with careful planning, accessible instruction, and a consistent daily rhythm. The program should provide meaningful academic challenges while allowing flexibility in pace, materials, assessment, and scheduling.

The teacher will work with Thrive’s Education Manager, who will guide the broader educational plan, curriculum selection, assessment systems, and progress review. Together, the team will help the family understand educational options and maintain a coherent record of learning.

Student Profile

The student is 15 and has a UK educational background, listed by the family as 10th grade. Dyslexia has shaped previous school experiences, and the family is now seeking individual instruction that is more personalized. Following a period outside consistent formal schooling, the initial priority will be to establish trust, understand current skills, and develop a manageable routine that supports steady progress toward long-term goals.

The family values an education that respects prior learning and keeps future options open. They prefer purposeful assessment and practical evidence of growth while minimizing unnecessary examinations. The student’s interests, goals, and input will help shape the final program.

What You Will Do
  • Plan and deliver individualized secondary instruction across the agreed subject areas, drawing on the Educational Roadmap (delivered by Thrive) and baseline findings.

  • Adapt reading, writing, materials, and lesson delivery to support dyslexia while maintaining age-appropriate content and expectations.

  • Establish a predictable learning rhythm, clear goals, and prepared lessons that can be adjusted in response to student progress.

  • Build a respectful working relationship with the student and incorporate meaningful choice within a well-planned program.

  • Select and adapt resources with the Education Manager, building on prior UK learning and addressing identified needs.

  • Use appropriate checks for understanding, work samples, projects, and other assessments to guide instruction and show growth.

  • Maintain organized instructional records and provide the evidence needed for the team’s academic record and course planning processes.

  • Communicate proactively with parents and the Education Manager about goals, progress, concerns, and upcoming needs.

  • Identify when a subject specialist or additional intervention is needed and coordinate with the education team.

What Makes Someone Successful in This Role
  • You connect well with teenagers and combine warmth, patience, clear expectations, and respect for student independence.
  • You prepare thoroughly and can explain the purpose behind your lessons, materials, and instructional decisions.
  • You understand dyslexia and can make content accessible while continuing to strengthen skills.
  • You adjust pacing and methods thoughtfully while sustaining a clear direction and meaningful academic progress.
  • You bring initiative, follow-through, professional discretion, and a collaborative approach to working with a family and Education Manager.
Credentials
  • Bachelor’s degree in education, a subject area, or a related field preferred; relevant teaching certification or comparable professional credentials highly valued.
  • Dyslexia or structured literacy training, special education credentials, or related advanced study are valuable, especially when paired with secondary teaching experience.
Required Experience
  • Approximately five to ten years of relevant teaching experience preferred, with substantial experience at the secondary level.
  • Demonstrated experience supporting students with dyslexia or comparable literacy-related learning needs.
  • Ability to teach across multiple agreed subject areas and communicate clearly about areas requiring specialist support.
  • Experience with individualized instruction, private education, homeschooling, or UK secondary education is a plus.
Skills
  • Individualized curriculum planning, differentiated instruction, accessible assessment, and organized progress documentation.
  • Strong written and verbal communication, sound professional judgment, and comfort using digital planning and learning tools.
  • Ability to provide a prepared program while responding constructively to student feedback and changing learning needs.
Professional Standards
  • Successful background screening and verifiable professional references.
  • Reliability, discretion, appropriate boundaries, and respect for family privacy.
  • Ability to work in person in Austin and meet the agreed schedule.
Compensation
  • $75k-$95k range, depending on credentials and experience. Final offer determined by family.
  • Final compensation, employment classification, employer, benefits, paid leave, and planning time will be confirmed before an offer is made.
  • Thrive advocates for professional compensation aligned with the educator’s experience and the finalized role.
Logistics
  • Location: Austin, Texas; exact area and teaching space to be confirmed.
  • Student count: one secondary learner, age 15.
  • Position scope: full-time private teacher placement; weekdays, instructional hours, and planning allocation to be finalized.
  • Target start: early December 2026 for acclimation and relationship-building, with a fuller program launch in January 2027.
  • Calendar: customized in partnership with the family, exact holidays will be determined closer to program launch.
