Job description

Thrive Education Partners is seeking an experienced Private Physics and Upper Level Math Tutor to provide individualized academic support to high school students in Williamson County, Tennessee.

This opportunity is designed for an educator with strong subject-matter expertise who is comfortable supporting students in rigorous high school math and physics courses, including Honors and AP-level coursework. We’re looking for someone who can do more than help students finish assignments—you should be able to explain complex concepts clearly, identify where understanding breaks down, and help students develop the problem-solving skills and confidence needed to succeed in advanced courses.

What You’ll Do
  • Provide individualized tutoring in upper-level high school math and physics, including Honors and AP courses.
  • Support coursework such as Algebra II, Geometry, Precalculus, Calculus, Statistics, Physics, and AP-level math and physics, based on your areas of expertise.
  • Break down challenging concepts and multi‑step problems in ways that are clear and accessible to individual students.
  • Identify gaps in prerequisite knowledge that may be interfering with success in more advanced coursework.
  • Help students strengthen mathematical reasoning, quantitative problem‑solving, and conceptual understanding rather than relying solely on memorized procedures.
  • Support students with homework, assessments, major assignments, and preparation for quizzes, tests, midterms, and final exams.
  • Teach effective approaches for studying and preparing for rigorous math and science courses.
  • Adjust instruction based on each student’s learning style, current course, teacher expectations, and academic goals.
  • Build students’ confidence and independence so they are increasingly able to approach challenging material on their own.
  • Communicate regularly with families about progress, priorities, and areas that may require additional support.
What Makes Someone Successful
  • Deep expertise in advanced mathematics and/or physics. You are confident teaching upper‑level high school content and can work comfortably with students enrolled in rigorous Honors and AP courses.
  • Strong conceptual teacher. You don’t simply show students how to get an answer. You can explain why a method works, connect concepts, and help students develop genuine understanding.
  • Experienced with high school students. You understand the pace and expectations of advanced secondary coursework and know how to build rapport with adolescents.
  • Able to diagnose where students are getting stuck. You can distinguish between a missing foundational skill, conceptual misunderstanding, calculation error, or ineffective problem‑solving approach and adjust instruction accordingly.
  • Comfortable with high‑achieving students. You can provide meaningful support while maintaining appropriately high expectations and helping students succeed in challenging coursework.
  • Reliable and consistent. You can establish a consistent tutoring schedule with students and families throughout Williamson County and the greater Nashville area.
Qualifications
  • Minimum of 3 years of relevant teaching or tutoring experience in mathematics, physics, or related STEM subjects
  • Meaningful experience working with high school students
  • Demonstrated ability to teach upper‑level mathematics and/or physics, including rigorous Honors and AP‑level coursework
  • Strong content knowledge in areas such as Algebra II, Precalculus, Calculus, Statistics, and Physics, based on area of expertise
  • Ability to explain complex mathematical and scientific concepts clearly and adapt instruction when a student is struggling
  • Experience helping students strengthen conceptual understanding, problem‑solving skills, and confidence in advanced coursework
  • Experience supporting students with homework, assessments, test preparation, and challenging course content
  • Ability to reliably and consistently provide in‑person tutoring in Williamson County at agreed‑upon times each week
Preferred Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s or master’s degree in Mathematics, Physics, Engineering, Education, or a related STEM field
  • Teaching certification in secondary mathematics, physics, or science
  • Experience as a high school math or physics teacher, particularly in Honors or AP courses
  • Direct experience teaching or tutoring AP Calculus, AP Statistics, and/or AP Physics
  • Experience working with high‑achieving students in academically rigorous courses
  • Familiarity with current high school math and physics curricula, course sequences, and expectations
  • Experience preparing students for cumulative exams, AP exams, or other advanced assessments
Professional Standards
  • Current background check required; Thrive facilitates this process
  • Verifiable references from prior teaching, tutoring, or academic roles
  • Strong professionalism, reliability, discretion, and communication
  • Commitment to providing consistent, high‑quality support throughout the school year
Compensation
  • $60–$90/hour, commensurate with experience, credentials, and subject‑matter expertise
  • Competitive compensation with opportunities for rate increases based on experience, performance, and continued work with Thrive
  • Consistent recurring weekly schedule
  • Opportunity for ongoing work with students throughout the school year
  • Opportunities for additional tutoring placements with Thrive based on availability and fit
