Summer Camp Manager

Summer 2027

$28-$35 hourly non-exempt

Marin Waldorf School in San Rafael, CA is looking for a dynamic, creative, and dedicated program manager for our yearly summer camp. Planning for the summer of 2027 starts immediately. We are looking for someone inspired to design and find staffing for an innovative Waldorf-inspired eight-week summer camp (June 14- August 6, 2027) with offerings for 1st- 6th graders. We have a 10-acre campus with fields, playgrounds, art classrooms and a short hiking distance from creeks and mountains.

Marin Waldorf School is the only fully accredited Waldorf school in Marin County. Our mission is to cultivate resilient, confident, authentic humans with deep self-knowledge and the tools to meet the future and make positive change in the world.

Position Summary

The Summer Camp Manager leads the planning, staffing, daily operation, and family experience of the MWS Summer Camp for children entering grades 1 through 6. This person holds the camp's rhythm and culture, ensures the safety and well-being of every camper, and serves as the primary point of contact for camp families and staff. The role also plays a meaningful part in the school's outreach, welcoming new families to our campus and community and giving them a first experience of Waldorf education. Planning can be done remotely or on site and the Camp Manager must be on-site during camp operation each day.

Key Responsibilities

Program Design and Daily Rhythm

  • In collaboration with school leadership, develop age-appropriate weekly specialized MWS activities curriculum and a daily rhythm grounded in Waldorf principles: a balance of active and quiet time, outdoor exploration, practical and artistic work, storytelling, music, and free play.
  • Design programming differentiated for younger (grades 1–3), middle (grades 4–6) with increasing challenge, responsibility, and independence for older children.
  • Integrate the campus's natural resources.

Staff Recruitment, Training, and Supervision

  • Recruit, interview, and recommend for hire camp counselors and specialty instructors, in coordination with the School Director and Business Office.
  • Plan and lead pre-camp staff orientation covering Waldorf approaches to working with children, camp rhythm, behavior guidance, supervision ratios, emergency procedures, and mandated reporting.
  • Create staff schedules and assignments; supervise, mentor, and support staff throughout the season; address performance concerns promptly and fairly.

Health, Safety, and Compliance

  • Maintain appropriate staff-to-camper ratios and supervision practices at all times.
  • Oversee first aid response, incident and injury documentation, and parent notification; report serious incidents to the School Director immediately.
  • Uphold the school's policies on behavior, conflict resolution, and bullying prevention, applying them consistently and compassionately.
  • Uphold the school’s anti-bias policy and incident reporting procedure.

Family Communication and Enrollment

  • Serve as the primary contact for camp families before and during the season, responding to inquiries warmly and promptly.
  • Prepare pre-camp welcome materials, packing lists, weekly newsletters, and end-of-session communications.
  • Coordinate with the Admissions, Registrar and Communications & Marketing teams on camp promotion, registration, and follow-up with non-MWS families who may be interested in enrollment.
  • Gather family feedback through an end-of-season survey.

Operations and Administration

  • Manage the camp budget in partnership with the business office, including supply purchasing, staffing costs, and tracking expenses against budget.
  • Coordinate with facilities staff on campus use, set-up, cleaning, and end-of-season restoration of classrooms and outdoor spaces.
  • Maintain accurate attendance, sign-in/sign-out, and incident records.
  • Prepare a written end-of-season report with enrollment figures, financial summary, family feedback, and recommendations for the following summer.
Qualifications

Required

  • At least two years of experience working with elementary- and middle-school-aged children in a camp, school, or youth program setting.
  • Supervisory experience leading staff or counselors.
  • Current CPR and First Aid certification (pediatric and adult), or willingness to obtain before camp begins.
  • Ability to pass a Live Scan background check and TB clearance, and to complete mandated reporter training.
  • Strong organizational, communication, and problem-solving skills; calm and sound judgment under pressure.
  • Genuine warmth toward children and a collaborative spirit with colleagues and families.
  • Commitment to Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion

Preferred

  • Experience with or training in Waldorf education, or a strong interest in learning its approach.
  • Background in gardening, handwork, woodworking, outdoor education, music, games and/or the arts.
  • Wilderness First Aid
  • Spanish language proficiency.

This role is primarily outdoors and active. The Camp Manager must be able to stand, walk, and move across varied terrain for extended periods; lift up to 40 pounds; work in summer heat; and respond quickly to children's needs and emergencies.
