Job summary

Blue Origin LLC seeks a Senior Quality Engineer to own process-related quality for investment castings, including NC disposition and cost-focused improvements. You will analyze metallurgical and non-destructive testing data, drive continuous improvements, and collaborate with customers to resolve quality concerns.

A strong quality background in aerospace or related fields and RCCA expertise are essential. Ideal candidates have a B.S.

  • Strong verbal and technical writing skills are required.
  • Experience in production aerospace, space, or military environments preferred.
  • Familiarity with AS9100/ISO9000 and related quality systems.
  • Proven RCCA/problem-solving capabilities with data-driven decisions.
  • B.S. in engineering and 7+ years in quality/engineering roles; Six Sigma is a plus.

Responsibilities

  • Owns process-related quality for investment castings (IC).
  • Disposes non-conformances (NCs) for rework/scrap/repair.
  • Drives continuous improvement and documents processing instructions.
  • Analyzes metallurgical and NDT data to support quality decisions.
  • Collaborates with internal/external customers, developing training on quality awareness.

Passion for our mission and vision is required!As part of a hardworking team of varied specialists, technicians, and engineers, your responsibilities include but are not limited to:Responsible for all process-related aspects of quality of Investment Castings (IC)Disposition of non-conformances (NC’s) for rework/repair/scrapContinuous improvement and clarification of written instructions for processing of investment castingsMust understand basic super-alloy heat treatments, chemical processing, and their effect on micro/macrostructures and surface inspection for indicationsStatistically analyze and understand casting-related process data (metallurgical and non-destructive testing) into useful summary reports using Excel/Minitab/JMP type applications. Interpret data for continuous process improvements to maximize Quality and reduce costDemonstrate dimensional improvements to reduce NC'sCollaborate with internal and external customers on quality related concerns; develop and present training materials to build quality awarenessDemonstrate self-motivation and initiative, as well as ability to work in team environmentsResponsible for implementing timely, cost-effective solutions to resolve manufacturing roadblocksExecute aggressive timeline schedules for project executionFor New Product Introduction/Process Changes:Work with modelling engineer to develop mold and gating designs for IC partsCoordinate with Shell Process Engineer to determine shelling sequence and material choices of slurry and stucco layers appropriate for part alloy and geometryDesign insulating wrap and pre-cast mold preparation techniques to ensure appropriate solidification and grain structure in resultant cast componentsDetermine appropriate mold preheat and metal pouring temperatures to achieve specification compliant castings with regards to porosity, grain structure, and surface integrityOther responsibilities as assignedMinimum Qualifications:Strong verbal and technical writing skills are a must. Written communication skills required for writing CAPEX justifications and vendor communicationsExperience in production environment. Aerospace, space launch, or military or commercial aviation preferredFamiliarity with AS9100 or ISO9000 Quality Management System and/or related quality systems and programsStrong capability and understanding with proven success of RCCA toolsSafely work with hazardous systems, chemicals, and materials using the proper PPEPhysical Requirements:Climb ladders and stairsLift and carry 50 lbs to waist level for limited durationsPreferred Qualifications:Direct experience with manufacturing investment castingsSix Sigma Green/Black Belt Certificate or deep understanding of lean methodologiesB.S. in engineering with 7+ years of relevant Quality or Engineering experienceKnowledge of manufacturing processes such as Machining, Welding, NDT, Sub-assembly and Final assembly and TestExperience mining data SQL, Redshift, Redash, DatabricksQuality assurance experience in rocket engine production environmentRelevant experience in transitioning a product from development, through production to operationsShown experience in transitioning a product from development, through production to operationsQMS audit experience and quality performance measurement analysis capabilitiesBase Pay Range for:WA applicants is $169,624.00 - $237,473.25Other site ranges may differCulture StatementDon’t meet all desired requirements?
