Job Summary and Responsibilities




Summary: The Principal Telecommunications Engineer - Private Networks will have a proven track record of troubleshooting and solving complex network issues across multiple devices and platforms, with a focus on wide-area networks (WAN), SONET, and MPLS technologies. The role requires deep experience in the design, deployment, and optimization of enterprise WANs and IEC-61850 networks for critical systems, particularly within electric utility environments. Knowledge of regulatory standards such as NERC CIP and NIST is essential

ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned:

  • Lead the design and deployment of wide-area networks (WANs) for large-scale, mission-critical environments, ensuring high availability, scalability, and reliability.
  • Troubleshoot advanced routing and switching protocols such as BGP, OSPF, MPLS, and SONET, with a strong ability to independently diagnose and resolve issues across multiple device manufacturers.
  • Utilize analytical and problem-solving skills to identify, analyze, and resolve complex networking issues through deduction and reasoning, determining the nature of the issue and its impact on the network design.
  • Design and implement network automation systems tailored for electric utilities, ensuring optimal performance and minimal downtime.
  • Develop and manage LAN solutions, with experience in IEC-61850 networks for critical systems and applications in industrial and utility environments.
  • Collaborate with internal and external teams to design and deploy network management systems (NMS) that monitor and optimize network performance, reliability, and security.
  • Design and implement SONET and MPLS infrastructures, ensuring optimal configuration, deployment, and troubleshooting practices for these critical technologies.
  • Contribute to the design and programming of Siemens switches and routers, applying deep technical expertise to ensure reliability and performance.
  • Ensure network designs are compliant with regulatory standards such as NERC CIP and NIST, ensuring adherence to security, privacy, and operational guidelines for critical infrastructures.
  • Provide expert-level support in designing, deploying, and troubleshooting enterprise WANs, ensuring seamless integration of various technologies and platforms.
  • Create and execute strategies for troubleshooting network-related issues, adapting and modifying standard techniques to meet the unique needs of the infrastructure.
  • Offer technical leadership and mentoring to junior engineers and cross-functional teams, providing guidance on complex network-related issues and projects.
  • Maintain clear and concise documentation of network designs, configurations, troubleshooting steps, and regulatory compliance processes.





Qualifications




EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE, and/or QUALIFICATIONS

  • 15+ years of hands-on experience in routing and switching, including expertise in SONET, MPLS, and other advanced networking protocols.
  • Bachelor's degree in Telecommunications, Computer Science, or a related field.
  • Proven ability to troubleshoot and resolve complex network issues using advanced techniques and reasoning, independent of the device manufacturer.
  • Experience in wide-area networks (WAN), enterprise WAN design, and LAN design with a specific focus on IEC-61850 networks for critical applications.
  • In-depth knowledge of network management systems (NMS) and experience designing and deploying them for large-scale environments.
  • Strong analytical skills, with the ability to solve difficult problems and design innovative solutions to meet operational and security requirements.
  • Familiarity with designing and programming Siemens switches and routers.
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal, with the ability to explain complex network issues to both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
  • Experience with regulatory standards, such as NERC CIP and NIST, with a solid understanding of how to design and deploy networks in compliance with these standards.
  • Proven track record of successfully deploying automation systems for electric utility environments.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a cross-functional team, offering expert-level advice and guidance on network design and troubleshooting.
  • Strong project management and organizational skills, capable of managing multiple tasks and priorities in a fast-paced environment.
