An organization within Northrop Grumman’s Payload and Ground Systems Division (PGSD), Mission Enabling Products business unit (MEP BU) is a leading designer, producer, and supplier of space vehicle structures and subsystems. Products include spacecraft panels, bus structures, precision optical structures, deployable structural systems and mechanisms, heat pipes, propulsion tanks, solar arrays, and antenna reflectors. Our products are on virtually every U. S. satellite built in the last 20 years.
The Propulsion operating unit (OU) with the MEP BU is seeking a Principal Mechanical Engineer (level 3) or Senior Principal Mechanical Engineer (level 4) to join our engineering team in Commerce, CA. The Propulsion OU designs and manufactures propellant management devices and tanks, and is a leading supplier to the aerospace industry. The Principal or Senior Principal Mechanical Engineering will report to the Manager Engineering 3 of the operating unit.
Primary Responsibilities include:
Directly support the chief engineer and engineering manager in achieving Design, Quality, and Cost objectives
Interact with design and development teams (teams include specialists in Design, Quality, Materials, Manufacturing) to create and verify creative design solutions that meet all requirements (technical, cost, schedule)
Lead and manage failure review board (FRB) activities to ensure component discrepancies and anomalies are thoroughly documented, reviewed, analyzed and dispositioned
Support manufacturing with discrepancy dispositions
Support development of analytical tool kits using Microsoft Excel, MATLAB, or other
Support development of fight hardware from preliminary through detailed design, drawing release, manufacturing, integration, verification testing, and transportation
Management and oversite of internal research and development programs
Plan and oversee material characterization tests of various materials used in the design of pressure vessels
Prepare and make presentations summarizing technical content for internal review boards and external customer reviews
Prepare and release test procedures for material development, component hardware testing, and ground support equipment
Support structural and dynamic testing of pressure vessel hardware
Basic Qualifications:
(Level 3) BS degree or higher in Mechanical or Aerospace Engineering with 5 Years of experience in engineering function with a BS degree or 3 years of experience with a MS degree
(Level 4) BS degree or higher in Mechanical or Aerospace Engineering with 10 Years of experience in engineering function with a BS degree or 7 years of experience with a MS degree
Proficiency in analysis of aerospace hardware containing metals, composite materials, and bonded joints
Knowledge of Titanium Alloy 6Al-4V and CP Titanium material performance and applications
Oral and written communication skills
Ability to work in a fast paced dynamic environment as part of a multi-discipline team
Must be a US citizen and have the ability to work on ITAR controlled products
Preferred Qualifications:
MS in Mechanical Engineering or Aerospace Engineering
Knowledge of finite element analysis, composite laminate theory, and dynamics
Knowledge of composite materials manufacturing processes
Proficiency in NX and LABVIEW a plus
Knowledge of titanium alloys and composite materials application for extreme environments
Previous experience in aerospace manufacturing facility
Skills & Qualifications:
Must be a self-starter and possess strong interpersonal skills with the ability to work independently as part of a team
Excellent communication, computer, documentation, and presentation are required
Ability to make sound decisions
Detail Oriented
Ability to multi-task
Ability to prioritize and manage time effectively
Must be a US citizen
Salary Range: $97,500 - $146,300
Salary Range 2: $120,900 - $181,300
The above salary range represents a general guideline; however, Northrop Grumman considers a number of factors when determining base salary offers such as the scope and responsibilities of the position and the candidate's experience, education, skills and current market conditions.
Employees may be eligible for a discretionary bonus in addition to base pay. Annual bonuses are designed to reward individual contributions as well as allow employees to share in company results. Employees in Vice President or Director positions may be eligible for Long Term Incentives. In addition, Northrop Grumman provides a variety of benefits including health insurance coverage, life and disability insurance, savings plan, Company paid holidays and paid time off (PTO) for vacation and/or personal business.
