Job summary

Chewy is seeking a Principal Software Engineer for the Fulfillment Technology & Science team to set technical direction and modernize the warehouse management system. You will lead architecture, implement production-grade code, and enable AI-assisted development across a high-volume fulfillment network.

You will drive choices across web/mobile interfaces, integration patterns, and data contracts while mentoring engineers and accelerating delivery.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or related field.
• 12+ years of software engineering experience designing and modernizing large-scale systems.
• Experience applying AI-assisted development tools to accelerate delivery.
• Expert programming in modern languages, with Java/Kotlin preferred.
• Deep AWS expertise across cloud/edge architecture and ops.
• Experience with high-throughput, low-latency, event-driven distributed systems (Kafka).
• Experience architecting web/mobile apps and familiarity with React/TypeScript/Node.js/Android/Kotlin.
• Experience designing workflow-driven, stateful systems.
• Experience integrating custom software and data models via APIs/events.
• Ability to set technical direction and mentor engineers.

Responsibilities

• Own modernization of Chewy’s core fulfillment technology and prove target architecture through production code.
• Architect highly available, low-latency systems across cloud and edge environments.
• Design rich mobile experiences for warehouse associates focused on usability and offline resilience.
• Establish a robust workflow framework for fulfillment operations with observability and recoverability.
• Define extensible integration patterns across systems, ML models, robotics, and control systems.
• Capture history of events and decisions for traceability and improvement.
• Provide bold technical leadership, lead design/code reviews, and mentor teams.
