Berkshire Hathaway Specialty Insurance (BHSI) in Boston seeks a highly skilled Principal Software Engineer to lead design and implementation of scalable, cloud-native solutions for a fast-growing Surety business. You will mentor teams, shape architecture, and drive adoption of modern frameworks while delivering tangible business value.

The role emphasizes autonomy, architectural ownership, and contributing across the full software lifecycle in a collaborative, fast-paced environment.

Qualifications

• 10+ years of progressive, hands‑on software engineering and system administration experience.
• Proven success in a Principal Engineer or leadership role.
• Extensive experience in API‑first, cloud‑native, event driven architecture.
• Advanced proficiency in Java, C#, and the .NET ecosystem, including .NET Core and ASP.NET.
• Strong front‑end development experience using Angular (latest versions).
• Deep knowledge of relational databases, particularly SQL Server.
• Hands‑on expertise with Microsoft Azure services (Azure Functions, App Services, Azure SQL, Azure Storage).
• Comprehensive understanding of microservices architecture (REST, gRPC).
• System design and architectural patterns, balancing scalability and maintainability.
• Technical versatility across full SDLC, with focus on architecture, design, implementation, and support.
• Analytical, problem‑solving, and attention to detail.
• Excellent communication across distributed teams and stakeholders.
• Business‑oriented mindset aligning technical solutions with goals.
• Self‑motivated, collaborative with ownership mentality.

Responsibilities

• Design and develop scalable, cloud‑native applications on Microsoft Azure.
• Lead front‑end engineering using Angular to deliver responsive UIs.
• Design and tune database architectures with SQL Server and ORM tools.
• Build and maintain CI/CD pipelines supporting DevOps and DevEx.
• Own the full software development lifecycle with emphasis on TDD and secure coding.
• Mentor engineering teams and conduct code reviews to promote best practices.
• Communicate architectural decisions to the Enterprise Architecture Review Board.
• Identify and resolve performance and reliability issues through targeted improvements.
• Create architecture and development documentation for scalability and onboarding.
• Ensure cybersecurity and data governance throughout delivery.
