Job summary

Okta is hiring a Principal Software Engineer for the Agent Access Policies sub-team within the Okta Secures AI program. You will shape the platform architecture, ensure reliability at scale, and drive cross-team collaboration to align with AI-enabled identity management goals.

You will mentor engineers, set technical direction, and champion improvements in CI/CD, observability, and security. The role emphasizes leadership and impact across the engineering organization.

Qualifications

• 10+ years of software engineering experience as Principal or Staff level.
• Experience designing and operating high-scale backend and event-driven systems.
• Own vaguely specified problems and drive clear technical direction.
• Experience working across engineering, product, and architecture in a fast-moving environment.
• Proven experience defining scalable backend architectures and integrating APIs.
• Solid understanding of web authentication and authorization basics.
• Architectural expertise with lasting, org-wide impact.
• Backend proficiency in Java or a similar type-safe language.
• Leadership in guiding engineers through AI adoption or culture change is a plus.
• Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Computer Science or related field

Responsibilities

• Set the technical direction for the Agent Access Policies framework.
• Design distributed systems for throughput, reliability, and consistency.
• Turn vague problems into clear modular designs for the team.
• Ensure platform scalability for humans and agents alike.
• Lead architectural reviews and raise the engineering bar.
• Collaborate with adjacent teams to keep the platform aligned.
• Advance AI-native development practices and reduce tech debt.
• Partner with Product and Design to own customer outcomes.
• Mentor engineers and raise the technical bar across the team
