Job summary

Magnendo Corp. in Newton, MA is building robotic tech to accelerate endovascular procedures. We are seeking a Principal Robotics Engineer to lead the algorithmic approach and system architecture for our magnetic navigation system.

You will own planning and control, drive design decisions through analysis, simulation, and testing, and collaborate with CV, software, and hardware teams to deliver reliable, high‑performance robotic solutions.

Qualifications

  • 9+ years of experience in robotics, controls, and motion planning engineering.
  • Strong fundamentals in robotic path planning and trajectory optimization, including sampling‑based planners and constrained nonlinear optimization with analytic gradients, as well as motion control, manipulator kinematics for redundant arms, and/or state estimation.
  • A great collaborator who understands the importance of clear communication and humility.
  • Experienced with algorithm and system design in an environment with high reliability requirements, preferably under a regulatory regime.
  • Comfortable serving as a technical authority — providing design guidance and review to internal engineers and external contractors alike.
  • Able to operate with the judgment and independence expected of a Principal‑level engineer — sets technical direction with limited oversight, while holding the line on rigor where it matters most.
  • Able to clearly convey complex robotics and controls tradeoffs to cross‑functional teams and external partners.
  • Proficient with Python and C++ for algorithm development, modeling, and simulation, with working knowledge of Linux

Responsibilities

  • Own the algorithmic approach and system architecture for our robotic magnetic navigation system, including collision‑aware motion planning, kinematic trajectory optimization, time parametrization, execution, and control
  • Design motion planning algorithms for a kinematically redundant system in a complex, highly constrained environment
  • Drive design decisions using first-principles engineering analysis, simulation, prototyping, and hands‑on testing
  • Define and review requirements, test plans, and acceptance criteria for robotics and controls system components
  • Collaborate closely with computer vision, software, and hardware engineers to integrate planning and control into the broader system
  • Support risk analysis, design reviews, and root‑cause investigations for robotics and controls algorithms and system design

Job description

Every minute matters in stroke treatment. Magnendo is developing robotic technology to make life-saving endovascular procedures faster, safer, and more accessible. By combining advanced robotics, magnetic navigation, and intelligent software, we are tackling one of the most technically demanding challenges in healthcare while aiming to expand access to advanced stroke care for patients around the world. Join us in shaping the future of endovascular intervention.

We're looking for a Principal Robotics Engineer to lead the algorithmic approach and system architecture behind our robotics and controls system – defining the models, algorithms, and system‑level tradeoffs that drive effective magnetic navigation.

You Will:
  • Own the algorithmic approach and system architecture for our robotic magnetic navigation system, including collision-awaremotion planning, kinematic trajectory optimization, time parametrization, execution, and control

You Are:
  • 9+ years of experience in robotics, controls, and motion planning engineering and demonstrated ability to deliver the types of algorithmic and system design work described above

  • Strong fundamentals in robotic path planning and trajectory optimization, including sampling‑based planners and constrained nonlinear optimization with analytic gradients, as well as motion control, manipulator kinematics for redundant arms, and/or state estimation

  • A great collaborator who understands the importance of clear communication and humility

  • Experienced with algorithm and system design in an environment with high reliability requirements, preferably under a regulatory regime

  • Comfortable serving as a technical authority — providing design guidance and review to internal engineers and external contractors alike

  • Able to operate with the judgment and independence expected of a Principal‑level engineer — sets technical direction with limited oversight, while holding the line on rigor where it matters most

  • Able to clearly convey complex robotics and controls tradeoffs to cross‑functional teams and external partners

  • Proficient with Pythonand C++ for algorithm development, modeling, and simulation, with working knowledge of Linux

Bonus Points:
  • Experience in the medical device industry, ideally with interventional or robotic systems

  • Experience with magnetic actuation, catheter/guidewire systems, or neurovascular/endovascular devices

  • Familiarity with robotics development tools such as Drake, ROS, Moveit, RVIZ, Gazebo, and Isaac Sim

  • Experience with haptics or teleoperation

  • Working knowledge of medical device software requirements (e.g., IEC 62304, IEC 60601)
