Job summary

SMS group USA seeks a Principal Process Power Engineer to lead automation and process power initiatives for metals production. You will analyze loads, size transformers, and optimize power usage across AC/DC arc furnace applications.

You will interface with project teams, mentor engineers, and support on-site commissioning and training while driving data-driven improvements across power and drive systems.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in Electrical or Power Engineering.
• Extensive experience in an engineering role in the metals or a similar industry.
• Experience with automation, power and drive systems.
• Experience in automation practices.
• Demonstrates ability to apply engineering principles to the solution of design problems.
• Ability to work with minimal supervision and mentor less experienced personnel.
• Be willing to travel to support the project work.
• Extensive experience at data analysis and troubleshooting.
• Excellent oral and written communication skills as well as excellent computer skills.

Responsibilities

• Analyze electrical loads and power usage to determine optimum performance windows.
• Sizing of transformers for AC and DC arc furnace applications.
• Consider magnetic field influences and associated grounding techniques.
• Review power system requirements for drive feeders and protection.
• Outline power regulation performance/response based on process applications.
• Support existing installed systems and assist customers with challenging technical issues through process knowledge, data analysis and implementation.
• Complete assignments requiring development of new and/or improved engineering techniques and procedures.
• Interface and communicate with a local project team and internal experts to provide engineering solutions to technical issues and project-related matters.
• Mentor young engineers during project design and execution.
• Perform on limited site commissioning and training as required.
