Job summary

SMS group is seeking a Principal Process Power Engineer to develop and implement automation solutions focused on process power technology for the metals industry. You will interface with project teams, support customers, and drive engineering excellence across power systems.

The role requires a bachelor’s degree in Electrical or Power Engineering, extensive metals experience, and a proven ability to work independently while mentoring peers. Occasional travel to project sites is expected.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical or Power Engineering.
  • Extensive metals or similar industry experience.
  • Experience with automation, power and drive systems.
  • Ability to apply engineering principles to design problems.
  • Willing to travel to support project work.
  • Strong data analysis and troubleshooting skills.
  • Excellent oral and written communication and computer skills.

Responsibilities

  • Analyze electrical loads and power usage to determine optimum performance windows.
  • Sizing of transformers for AC and DC arc furnace applications.
  • Consider magnetic field influences and grounding techniques.
  • Review power system requirements for drive feeders and protection.
  • Outline power regulation performance/response based on process applications.
  • Support existing installed systems and assist customers with technical issues through data analysis.
  • Develop new or improved engineering techniques and procedures.
  • Interface with local project team and internal experts to provide engineering solutions.
  • Perform limited site commissioning and training as required.
