Job summary

Roblox is seeking a Principal ML Engineer for Matchmaking in San Mateo, CA. You will own the technical vision for models, objectives, and algorithms that map player to servers at massive scale, optimizing engagement and system efficiency.

You'll collaborate with Discovery, Search, and infrastructure teams to implement production-ready ML solutions, run offline/online experiments, and mentor other engineers while delivering measurable impact across hundreds of thousands of servers.

Qualifications

• 8+ years of experience delivering large-scale ML systems for ranking, recommendation, or allocation.
• Experience defining objective functions and deploying predictive models.
• Ability to break down long-term requirements into iterative deliverables.
• Led cross-team technical decisions and mentorship.
• Strong user-focused technical mindset.
• Generalist with multiple languages and technologies.
• Hands-on willingness to tackle data/ML problems.
• BS in CS or related; MS/PhD a plus.

Responsibilities

• Own the technical direction and ML strategy for matchmaking and server placement.
• Define and evolve the matchmaking objective to balance utility with latency and cost.
• Build models predicting high-value actions and outcomes per player–server match.
• Design and productionize candidate-server retrieval, ranking, and assignment.
• Lead engineers by example and mentor, fostering engineering excellence.
• Build data/feature/training/serving/evaluation systems for matchmaking ML.
• Collaborate with Discovery, Search, modelers, and infra engineers.
• Define offline evaluation and run online experiments to measure impact.
• Translate research into iterative production improvements and share insights.
