Job summary

System One, a U.S. biotechnology organization, is seeking a Principal Design Engineer (Mechanical/Mechatronic) for onsite work in Boston, MA. This contract-to-hire role involves acting as the design authority for machine hardware and leading high-risk mechanical subsystems.

You will drive preliminary and detailed designs, ensure manufacturability, and shepherd subsystems from concept to build, with a strong emphasis on precision fluid handling and rigorous documentation.

Qualifications

• BS or MS in mechanical, mechatronic, or biomedical engineering.
• 10+ years designing precision electromechanical instruments or automated production equipment, including 5+ years as lead designer.
• Expert CAD, GD&T, tolerance stack-up analysis, materials selection for fluid contact and biocompatibility, and design for manufacture and assembly.
• Deep practical experience with precision fluid handling: pumps, valves, manifolds, tubing, connectors, seals, dead-volume control.
• A portfolio of machines that were built, not just drawn.

Responsibilities

• Create preliminary system design: block diagram, machine layout, modularisation and integration strategy.
• Detailed design of the system subsystems including interfaces, fluid flow management, actuation mechanisms, force and displacement profiles, materials compatibility.
• Detailed design of automated liquid handling: bulk reagent routing, sample presentation to analytical interfaces, product management from transcription and encapsulation through to fill-finish handoff, with aseptic continuity across every fluid-path boundary.
• Consolidated engineering design package: CAD models, 2D manufacturing drawings, bill of materials, assembly plans, and the embedded risk register.
• Fabrication, assembly, and verification of the subsystems you designed.
