Job summary

System One is seeking a Design Engineer (Mechanical / Mechatronic) for a contract-to-hire position in Boston, MA. The role centers on mechanical design ownership of modular architectures, including machine enclosures, alongside the Principal Design Engineer.

Responsibilities include modular enclosure layout, assembly, and interface with fill-finish, plus creating CAD models, 2D drawings, and BOMs. Hands-on fabrication and verification of subsystems are required, including environmental controls.

Qualifications

Join a growing U.S. biotechnology organization that supports a federal initiative in next-generation RNA medicine manufacturing. In this role, you will work alongside the Principal Design Engineer to develop the mechanical design, with ownership of modular architectures, including machine enclosures.

Responsibilities

• The modular enclosure: internal layout for all six subsystems, structural frame and panels, HEPA filtration and positive-pressure control, environmental monitoring provisions, access and egress, and the breakdown into modules.
• Support the fill-finish subsystem integration including aseptic boundaries across interfaces alongside a specialist partner.
• CAD models, 2D manufacturing drawings and bill of materials documents.
• Fabrication, assembly, and verification of the subsystem, including environmental controls and environmental monitoring.

Requirements

• BS or MS in mechanical, mechatronic, or biomedical engineering.
• Five to nine years of hands‑on mechanical design of instruments, laboratory automation, process equipment, or medical devices, with delivered products behind them.
• Strong CAD, GD&T, sheet metal, and machined-part design, and drawing production to a controlled standard.
• Cleanroom, isolator, HEPA filtration, and pressure cascade exposure is a strong plus.
• Genuinely hands‑on, you will be assembling and fitting this hardware, not only drawing it.
