Job description

Principal Mechanical Engineer

Department: Engineering

Employment Type: Full Time

Location: Burlington, MA

Compensation: $150,000 - $180,000 / year

Description
Why should you join our success story?

Based on patented technology developed at MIT, Harvard Medical School and by the Company, Myomo develops and markets the MyoPro® product line of lightweight, non-invasive, powered arm braces (orthoses) to restore function in paralyzed or weakened arms and hands of individuals that have suffered a stroke, spinal cord, or nerve injury. (E.g. brachial plexus injury or other neuro-muscular disabilities.) It is the only device that, sensing a patient’s own neurological signals through non-invasive wearable sensors, can restore the ability to use their arms and hands so that they can live independently, increase their quality of life, reduce cost of care, and return to work. Published clinical research shows a clinically significant instantaneous reduction in upper extremity impairment with the MyoPro. Our technology has been referred by leading-edge rehabilitation facilities including Mayo Clinic, Kennedy Krieger Institute, Cleveland Clinic, Loma Linda Medical Center, Massachusetts General Hospital, numerous VA Hospitals, and more. Myomo is headquartered in Burlington, Massachusetts, with sales and clinical professionals across the U.S.

What we’re looking for:

Keys to success in this role include not only technical leadership, but also priority clarification and project management support within the mechanical function. In other words, our Principal would help ensure that our ME team is working to solve the right challenge/s at the right time and resources are allocated appropriately to various aspects of product development projects. In addition, our ideal candidate enjoys mentoring and coaching other engineers.

How You’ll Drive Impact:
  • Leading mechanical design and development within Myomo's wearable robotic orthotic systems, driving innovation in lightweight structures, actuation integration, and human-robot interaction.
  • Guiding optimization of designs for durability, performance, manufacturability, and regulatory
compliance - with scalability and design for manufacturability (DFM) in mind.
  • Leading and/or facilitating rigorous design reviews, fostering a culture of technical excellence and
    accountability.
  • Promoting a high-performance design and development environment, mentoring and coaching
    engineers as appropriate.
  • Ensuring that designs prioritize comfort, weight optimization, adjustability, and long-term wearability, incorporate clinician and patient feedback into iterative design improvements.
  • Driving clarity around project priorities, allocating resources and managing timelines appropriately in accordance with Project Management in order to meet product development milestones.
  • Ensuring compliance within a medical device design controls environment, supporting V&V as well as production improvement processes as appropriate.
  • Partnering with Manufacturing to support design transfer and production scale-up.
What You’ll Bring:
  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering; and advanced degree may be a plus.
  • 8-15+ years' experience in a design engineering role with experience coaching and guiding junior team members.
  • Experience designing mechanisms for automation, complex electro-mechanical systems, and/or mechanical solutions requiring a high level of precision.
  • Experience with wearables, medical device robotics/controls, and design controls a plus.
  • Strong written and verbal communication as well as organizational and time management skills.
