Job summary

Western Digital Research in San Jose, California, seeks a PhD-level materials scientist to advance thin-film technologies for emerging devices. The role focuses on superconducting qubits, non-volatile memories, and novel sensor applications in a state-of-the-art cleanroom environment.

You will work with ultra-high vacuum deposition systems, characterize films, and design materials for nanoscale devices, collaborating with engineers and staff across disciplines.

Qualifications

  • Ph.D. in relevant field required.
  • Experience with non-volatile memory, superconducting qubits, oxide semiconductors or novel sensors.
  • Hands-on experience with UHV film deposition equipment.
  • Experience with film characterization tools and techniques (XRD, XRF, XPS, AFM).
  • Knowledge of nanofabrication and device design/operation.
  • Proven ability to self-direct a research project.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct hands-on, experimental research of thin films for emerging technologies.
  • Thin film growth by physical vapor deposition in ultra-high vacuum.
  • Characterize film properties across multiple domains (structural, electronic, optical, chemical, magnetic, thermal, mechanical).
  • Design materials for integration into nanoscale devices.
  • Collect, analyze, present and report characterization data and conclusions.
  • Collaborate with a team of engineers and support staff.
