Job summary

GitHub is seeking a Principal Software Engineer to set technical direction for its web UI platform, spanning performance, accessibility, and availability. This is a systems role across multiple teams, focusing on large migrations, scalable patterns, and cross-team collaboration.

You will partner with Principal and Staff engineers, engineering managers, and product leadership to drive the platform forward, shaping paved paths adopted by many teams and influencing architectural decisions at scale.

Qualifications

• 9+ years in Software Engineering with production software experience in languages including C, C++, C#, Java, JavaScript, Go, Ruby, Rust, or Python.
• Associate’s or higher degrees with extensive software experience and proven delivery of production code.
• Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or related field with 7+ years experience in software engineering.
• Master’s or Doctorate with 5+ years experience in software engineering.

Responsibilities

• Own the technical direction for GitHub's web UI platform across performance, accessibility, consistency, and availability.
• Drive large cross-team initiatives and migrations with careful sequencing to avoid disruption.
• Establish patterns and paved paths for frontend development that scale across teams.
• Produce architecture and design proposals, evaluate tradeoffs, and build cross-functional alignment.
• Mentor engineers and raise the bar through design/code reviews and pairing.
• Represent frontend platform priorities to leadership and secure needed resources.
