Principal Engineer – EHS Division & Process Safety

About The Opportunity

Precision Talent Partners is partnering with a global leader in advanced materials, engineering, and manufacturing technology to identify a Principal Engineer – EHS Division & Process Safety for a highly technical and visible role supporting research, development, engineering, and early-stage manufacturing.

This is not a traditional EHS compliance position. If you're an experienced engineer or technical EHS professional who enjoys process safety, risk assessment, complex engineering environments, and solving problems before they reach the manufacturing floor, this is an opportunity worth exploring.

The Principal Engineer will work alongside scientists, engineers, equipment owners, and project teams as new technologies, materials, processes, and manufacturing capabilities move from early concepts toward implementation and scale-up.

This is an excellent opportunity for an experienced engineer or technical EHS professional who enjoys solving complex problems and wants to influence projects before equipment is installed, processes are finalized, and manufacturing begins. The goal? Identify risk early, engineer safer solutions into the process, and help innovation move forward responsibly.

Why This Role Stands Out
  • Work at the Front End of Innovation - Become involved while new technologies, processes, equipment, and materials are still being developed, not after decisions have already been made.
  • Technical Depth - This role requires someone who can dig into chemistry, equipment, machine safety, process design, regulations, and engineering standards to understand risk and recommend practical solutions.
  • High Visibility & Influence - Partner directly with scientists, engineers, project teams, business partners, and technical leaders across a sophisticated global organization.
  • Engineering + EHS - The ideal candidate does not necessarily come from a traditional EHS career path. Strong manufacturing, process, chemical, mechanical, or technical engineers with meaningful process safety and risk‑assessment experience may be excellent fits.
  • Make Innovation Safer by Design - Rather than simply enforcing requirements, you'll help teams determine how to move complex projects forward while appropriately managing risk.
What You'll Do
  • Partner with scientists, engineers, and project teams to identify EHS considerations associated with new materials, processes, equipment, and manufacturing scale‑up.
  • Participate in Management of Change and process hazard review activities.
  • Provide technical EHS expertise during project meetings, design reviews, risk assessments, and engineering decisions.
  • Lead, facilitate, and participate in Process Hazard Analyses (PHA) and other technical risk assessments.
  • Research processes, chemistry, equipment, regulations, and industry standards to evaluate potential EHS risks.
  • Recommend engineering safeguards, administrative controls, and other risk‑reduction strategies while considering project schedule and budget.
  • Collaborate with industrial hygiene and environmental specialists to evaluate new chemicals and potential regulatory implications as projects scale.
  • Lead and support incident investigations, root‑cause analysis, corrective actions, and broader system improvements.
  • Deliver technical EHS training and translate complex requirements into practical guidance for engineering and operational teams.
  • Support Process Safety Management (PSM) requirements for covered processes.
  • Help transfer critical safety and environmental knowledge as projects transition into manufacturing and operations.
What We're Looking For
Required
  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Technology, Physical Sciences, or another related technical discipline
  • 10+ years of manufacturing and/or engineering experience
  • Experience leading or participating in risk assessments, hazard reviews, PHA, or similar technical safety reviews
  • Ability to evaluate technical processes, chemistry, equipment, regulations, and standards from a risk perspective
  • Experience with incident investigations, root‑cause analysis, and corrective actions
  • Ability to translate complex technical and EHS requirements into clear, actionable recommendations
  • Strong collaboration skills and the ability to work effectively with scientists, engineers, technical teams, and business stakeholders
Preferred
  • PE, CSP, and/or CIH certification
  • Experience within R&D, engineering, pilot‑scale, or early manufacturing scale‑up environments
  • Knowledge of process safety, machine safety, laboratory safety, industrial heating equipment, and/or electrical safety
  • Familiarity with PSM, RMP, TSCA, and/or REACH
  • Experience developing or implementing AI‑enabled tools to streamline EHS activities
