Job summary

Backcountry is seeking a Principal Engineer, Application Development to own architecture, quality, and engineering standards across the e-commerce platform powering five outdoor and powersports brands.

You will lead a team building fulfillment and order-management systems, driving AI-powered innovation to raise throughput and reliability. Expect ownership of end-to-end delivery, code quality, and long-term maintainability.

Qualifications

• Ten-plus years in software development with e-commerce fulfillment experience.
• Experience using AI tooling to accelerate delivery and innovation.
• Expertise in Java, Spring Framework, Spring Boot, and Node.js.
• Strong knowledge of software architecture and design patterns at enterprise scale.
• Relational and NoSQL databases experience with performance tuning.
• Experience with cloud platforms (GCP/AWS) and container tooling.
• Proven track record leading software teams and delivering production-grade software.

Responsibilities

• Spearhead AI-driven innovation to improve engineering throughput and reliability.
• Design, develop, and maintain fulfillment and order-management systems at scale.
• Lead a small team of developers, providing technical direction and accountability.
• Publish clean API documentation, observability, and alerting for dependability.
• Collaborate with product/design/ops to ensure timely delivery of projects.
• Establish quality gates enabling rapid iteration with a safety net.
• Mentor engineers at all levels and uphold engineering best practices.
• Represent Backcountry values in technical decisions and team interactions.
