Job summary

Fifth Third Bank is seeking a Principal Software Engineer to join the Agentic Engineering team. You will lead production agents, define engineering standards, and architect the agent platform to enable reliable cross-domain collaboration.

The role requires deep proficiency in Python and TypeScript, a track record of leading engineers, and experience with agentic or multi-step automated systems. Hybrid work is offered, with locations including Farmington Hills, MI; Frisco, TX; and Cincinnati, OH.

Qualifications

• 8–12+ years of software engineering experience with Python and TypeScript.
• Track record of technically driving teams of engineers—mentoring, setting standards, shipping complex systems.
• Experience building agentic or multi-step automated systems—tool orchestration, LLM reasoning loops, or agent frameworks.
• Ability to set architectural direction and reusable patterns used by other engineers.
• Experience designing for non-deterministic behavior, edge cases, and testing/observability.

Responsibilities

• Lead and grow a team of software engineers building production agents—set direction, review designs, mentor, unblock.
• Define the team's engineering standards—agent patterns, tool integration, testing, code quality, observability, review practices.
• Architect the agent platform—the shared services and protocols enabling agents to discover and compose reliably.
• Stay hands-on—write code, prototype hard problems, pair with engineers on tough parts.
• Own the quality and safety of agent behavior—design how we verify agents stay accurate, cost-efficient, and within guardrails over time.
• Translate vision into a roadmap—break ambitious platform vision into shippable increments for the team to execute.
• Represent the team to leadership—communicate architecture, trade-offs, and progress clearly to engineering and product leadership.
