Job summary

Automatic Data Processing, Inc. is seeking an Embedded Systems – HMI Engineer/Principal to design and develop HMI and embedded display systems for welding machines and portable tools.

The role focuses on meeting customer requirements with intuitive, reliable operator interfaces, and involves cross-functional collaboration across product teams. The position supports remote work with travel to SFE facilities in the US and abroad, reporting to the Senior Technical Program Manager.

Qualifications

• Degree in Math/Sciences with HMI/embedded software emphasis.
• Proven experience in HMI/GUI for embedded systems in manufacturing environments.
• Strong proficiency in C/C++, Python, and embedded UI frameworks.
• Experience with embedded Linux/RTOS and display hardware interfaces.
• Familiarity with touchscreen, SPI/I2C/UART/CAN/Ethernet interfaces.
• Knowledge of UX/UI for industrial operator interfaces and usability.

Responsibilities

• HMI System Development: design and implement embedded HMI software end-to-end.
• Define and maintain HMI design standards across product lines.
• Product Management: evolve HMI platforms through releases and feedback.
• Lifecycle Engineering: evaluate replacement display hardware due to obsolescence.
• Provide HMI hardware/software design for new products, including display selection and architecture.
• Collaborate with mechanical, controls, marketing, and applications engineering.
• Define PCB design/layouts for HMI controller boards and interfaces.
• Customer service: resolve field performance issues related to HMI and UI.
• Diagnose rendering/communication/data presentation issues and improve reliability.
• Develop modular, scalable HMI architectures with multi-language support and remote connectivity.
• Other duties as assigned.
