RigUp seeks a Principal Electrical Engineer in Long Beach, CA to lead electrical engineering delivery across a portfolio of oil, gas, and chemical projects. You will provide advanced technical leadership, oversee a team of engineers and designers, and ensure safe, compliant, and timely project execution.

Qualifications

  • Required: BS or MS in Electrical Engineering.
  • Required: 12+ years of experience in oil and gas.
  • Required: Professional Engineer (PE) or P.Eng status in US/Canada.

Job description

We are seeking a Principal Electrical Engineer in our Long Beach, CA office location to lead electrical engineering delivery across a portfolio of projects. In this role, you will provide advanced electrical engineering services, offering technical leadership, oversight, and supervision within the electrical engineering team. You will be responsible for managing and mentoring a team of engineers and designers, ensuring high-quality, compliant, and efficient delivery across oil, gas, and chemical projects. This includes guiding technical direction, reviewing deliverables, and driving performance to meet project objectives, safety standards, and client expectations.

Key Responsibilities
  • Manage a team of electrical engineers and designers and oversee their work on oil/gas/chemical projects
  • Plan, organize, and direct engineering work, ensuring on-time completion, safety-in-design, and quality outcomes from conception to completion
  • Outline project requirements including actively promoting workshare, assign tasks, and supervise progress
  • Assist and support junior personnel within the electrical engineering team (if required)
  • Motivate and create a positive work environment, helping the team to learn, grow, and work together to achieve common goals
  • Deliver electrical engineering services that meet company, customer, and applicable statutory and regulatory specifications, on time and within budget
  • Initiate, manage, and supervise (if required) electrical engineering project requirements
  • Act as the Electrical Engineering Lead on specific projects (if required)
  • May lead one or more projects while providing guidance for other lead engineers within the program
  • Ensure required services meet company, customer, and applicable statutory and regulatory requirements, on time and within budget
Client & Stakeholder Management
  • Collaborate with project management, clients, and other disciplines to meet project objectives
  • Maintain relationships with project management and clients to ensure satisfaction with the quality and progress of the project
  • Proactively resolve any discrepancies between company and customer requirements
  • Communicate effectively (written, emails, verbal) with the team, management, other interfacing disciplines, and project stakeholders
Technical Execution
  • Perform electrical engineering services including:
    • Participating in relevant meetings
    • Preparing progress reports
    • Following required checking procedures
  • Ensure project scope is clear and that changes comply with project change management processes
  • Provide assistance and advice during procurement, construction, and commissioning activities:
    • Write requisitions
    • Conduct technical bid evaluations
    • Write purchase orders
  • Develop and design MV and LV electrical distribution systems, equipment selection, protective relay selection, and power management system configuration
  • Perform/review power systems studies and protective device settings

  • Keep up to date with the latest developments and technical innovations in electrical engineering
  • Identify issues and problems, develop appropriate solutions, and ask for assistance when required

  • Excellent technical and practical engineering skills with ability to consistently deliver quality, accurate, and timely work
  • Excellent knowledge of fundamental requirements of electrical engineering and basic requirements of other engineering fields
  • Excellent knowledge of applicable local and international standards and statutory and regulatory specifications
  • Competent use of relevant software (MS Office Suite) and electrical engineering-specific software (ETAP, SPL)
  • Experience in development and design of MV and LV electrical distribution systems, equipment selection, protective relay selection, and power management system configuration
  • Ability to perform/review power systems studies and protective device settings
  • Experience with interface management
  • Extensive technical and practical experience in electrical engineering in the same or similar industry, including experience in multi-disciplinary projects and teams
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills in English
Education & Qualifications
Required:
  • BS or MS degree in Electrical Engineering
Preferred:
  • Relevant postgraduate qualifications in engineering, management, project management, or supervisory qualifications or equivalent
  • 12+ years of experience in oil and gas industry
  • Oil and gas experience
  • Experience in software such as MS Office Suite and electrical engineering-specific software (ETAP, SPL)
  • Experience in development and design of electrical distribution systems, equipment selection, protective relay selection, and power management system configuration
  • Professional Engineer (PE or P.Eng) status in US/Canada
