Job description

Principal Data Security Engineer

The Data Security Engineering team is responsible for safeguarding data and systems against threats such as unauthorized access, data breaches, and cyberattacks. This includes engineering, deployment, and support of critical control systems, security platforms, and related processes. The Cyber Engineering teams work closely with the Cyber Defense Organization and Technology teams to support Comerica's systems.

The ideal candidate will have experience developing security protocols and encryption methods to protect data at rest and in transit, as well as enforcing DLP policies across systems with structured and unstructured data.

The Principal Data Security Engineer leads department-wide engineering efforts for complex, distributed systems. They are recognized as platform and domain experts, demonstrating strong cross-functional collaboration and solutions design. The role emphasizes technical leadership in data security solutions and staying updated with domain innovations. The engineer will execute high-complexity projects and support Risk Management, Third-Party Risk Management, Model Risk Management, and Business Continuity and Disaster Recovery as delegated by the Cybersecurity Engineering Manager.

Position Responsibilities

1. Cybersecurity Engineering

• Provide expert analysis, solutions, and implementation plans aligned with strategic roadmaps.
• Partner with Risk Coordinators and Audit to ensure successful audit responses and identify improvement areas.
• Support incident response and security events in coordination with the Cybersecurity Engineering Manager and team.
• Deliver risk issue and control gap solutions, overseeing strategic remediation plans.
• Participate in strategic planning with Cybersecurity Architecture and Engineering teams.
• Continuously improve security platforms and tools within the domain.

1. Communication and Collaboration

• Share and refine feedback on risk detection, gap analysis, and knowledge management.
• Manage resources with vendors and operations, fostering continual improvement.
• Maintain relationships with Cybersecurity Architecture and support design pattern development.
• Engage with stakeholders to develop security solutions for business needs.
• Coordinate changes to support Cyber Engineering enhancements.
• Collaborate across teams to troubleshoot and respond to security events.
• Present strategic roadmaps, project updates, and risk closures to senior management and stakeholders.

1. Department Sustainability and Innovation

• Monitor domain changes, evaluate innovations and risks, and partner with Cyber Architecture and Engineering leads.
• Work with management to develop sustainable processes, roadmaps, and system improvements to reduce risks and administrative effort.

1. Planning and Administration

• Support the growth and development of junior staff through knowledge transfer.
• Evaluate and design projects, processes, and solutions to meet application needs.
• Propose alternative solutions for non-standard requirements, assessing feasibility and risks.
• Guide complex project planning and execution, managing large initiatives across multiple functions.
• Keep management informed with accurate and timely reporting.
• Participate in departmental committees and stay informed on emerging cybersecurity technologies.
