Job summary

Novartis’ Biologics Center ABF in Cambridge, MA seeks a Principal Scientist to lead formulation development for complex biologics, including mAbs and ADCs. You will guide a team of 10+ associates, shaping strategies from discovery to development and ensuring high scientific standards.

You will collaborate across CMC and cross-functional teams, develop robust formulations, and mentor colleagues while driving innovation in analytical characterization and high-throughput screening.

Qualifications

• PhD in biochemistry, biotechnology, chemistry, or related field with 2+ years of industry experience.
• Proven experience leading and developing scientific teams.
• Hands-on expertise in protein formulations and biophysical properties (DLS, viscosity, stability).
• Experience designing preformulation studies and interpreting stability-indicating assays (SEC, CE, charge variants, MS).
• Strong communication and organizational skills.

Responsibilities

• Design and execute formulation screening strategies for large-molecule therapeutics, especially mAbs.
• Lead studies to identify stable formulations and communicate results to cross-functional teams.
• Manage resources, timelines, and deliverables with a customer-focused mindset.
• Provide leadership and mentorship as the functional manager.
• Promote a safe, inclusive, and collaborative environment across discovery and development.
• Partner with CMC teams to advance clinical candidates and formulate drug product processes.
• Develop stabilization strategies for liquid, frozen, and lyophilized formats.
• Apply biophysical/analytical methods (DSC, DLS, UV-Vis, turbidity, SEC, HIC).
• Work with automation teams to implement high-throughput screening and characterization.
• Operate instruments, analyze data, maintain ELN, and author technical reports.
• Contribute to data interpretation, presentations, and cross-functional discussions.
