Job summary

Novartis Biologics Center in Cambridge, MA is seeking a Principal Scientist I/II to lead formulation development for complex biologics, including mAbs, multispecifics, and ADCs. You will mentor a team of 10+ associates, driving strategies from discovery through early development in a collaborative Novartis culture.

The role emphasizes identifying developability risks, shaping formulation strategies, and partnering with CMC to advance candidates, applying biophysical methods and high-throughput

Qualifications

• PhD in biochemistry, biotechnology, chemistry, or related field with 2+ years of industry experience.
• Proven experience leading scientific teams.
• Hands-on expertise in protein formulations and assessment of biophysical properties (DLS, viscosity, DSC, SEC, HIC).
• Strong background in developing formulations for large-molecule therapeutics and early-stage development workflows.
• Experience designing and interpreting preformulation studies and stability-indicating assays.
• Excellent communication and multitasking skills.

Responsibilities

• Design and execute formulation screening strategies for large-molecule therapeutics (mAbs and related modalities).
• Lead studies to identify stable formulations and communicate results to cross-functional R&D teams.
• Manage team resources, timelines, and deliverables with a customer-focused mindset.
• Provide leadership, mentorship, and direction to team members as the functional manager.
• Promote a safe, inclusive, and collaborative environment across Biologics discovery and development.
• Partner with CMC teams to advance clinical candidates and finalize formulations.
• Develop stabilization strategies for liquid, frozen, and lyophilized drug formats for clinical development.
• Apply biophysical and analytical methods (DSC, DLS, UV-Vis, turbidity, SEC, HIC).
• Work with automation teams to implement high-throughput screening and characterization.
• Operate instrumentation, analyze data, maintain ELN, and author technical reports.
• Contribute to data interpretation and cross-functional discussions within the global BRC.
