Job summary

Clearway Energy Group is seeking a Principal Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) Engineer to oversee preliminary engineering, fire safety, specs, system optimization, and procurement for stand-alone, hybrid, and co-located BESS facilities. Hybrid role with offices in Scottsdale, AZ, San Diego, SF, Houston, or Denver; Scottsdale preferred.

You will drive multi‑gigawatt project pipeline by coordinating with internal teams, vendors, and consultants to deliver optimized BESS solutions, while

Qualifications

• 8+ years of experience in BESS engineering, integration, development, and commissioning for utility-scale projects.
• Ability to write technical specifications and performance requirements.
• Familiarity with UL/IEEE electrical standards and NFPA/UL certifications.
• Experience with TCP/IP, Modbus, and related controls software/hardware.
• Knowledge of EMS, BMS, SCADA, and energy storage systems.

Responsibilities

• Lead BESS platform development and refine EPC requirements.
• Assess and optimize BESS design for safety, tech standards, and compliance.
• Provide engineering support through development, construction, and commissioning.
• Coordinate with customers, vendors, and EPC teams on technical specs.
• Advise on hardware/software control requirements and project risk mitigation.
