Cannon seeks a Principal Automation Engineer in San Luis Obispo to lead design, integration, and delivery of automation projects across water, energy, and industrial sectors. The role blends strategic client engagement with technical leadership and hands-on engineering to grow our automation capabilities.

The successful candidate will mentor engineers, manage project scope and resources, and ensure QA/QC, safety, and regulatory compliance while building a strong backlog of billable work.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in engineering from an accredited college, with a concentration in Control Systems, Electrical, or Mechanical.
• California Professional Engineer (PE) license required.
• 15+ years of experience in control systems engineering.
• 8+ years of experience in project management.
• 5+ years of experience as a consultant.
• 5+ years of experience in business development.
• 5+ years of experience managing a team and keeping them utilized.
• Proficient with PLC programming in more than 1 software platform: Rockwell, Modicon, etc.
• Proficient with SCADA HMI and historian software: Ignition, Aveva/Wonderware, FTView, etc.
• Experience with network design, installation, configuration and troubleshooting.

Responsabilités

• Client Engagement & Business Development: identify opportunities and engage with clients to understand automation needs.
• Project Leadership & Execution: lead design, integration, and implementation of automation projects.
• Team Collaboration & Resource Planning: mentor juniors and help align staff resources with project needs.
• Design & Engineering Oversight: oversee control system designs, hardware selection, and bid documents.
• Integration & Commissioning: program PLCs, HMIs/SCADA, and develop testing protocols.
